Organizing Youth Darts
Planning the League
There are many parallels to Adult Leagues which apply to the Youth. After you have accepted the job of creating a Youth League you must then establish your Committees, try to include at least one member of the League. They will act as Group representative and liaison. The following is required to run and co-ordinate a successful League:
- League Constitution which should define the activities, objectives, stucture and standing between the League and the Governing Body.
- Organization By-Laws should outline the League, create individual responsibilities, and a sense of order. Set the Board of Directors up to include the Youth to act as liaison with the Adults and League members.
- Bank Account: As you begin to accumulate the League entry fee you must set up a Bank Account. Do not put the funds in a personal Account, or other Organization Account, doing this will cause you headaches and problems later on in the Season. Open an Account under the League Name and maintain a two signature signing authority.
- Consent or Waiver A must! This form is to obtain written permission of the parent or guardian for a child to participate in the League. This should outline such articles as liability within the Establishment, the possibility of injury as well as the method you employ to minimize accidental injury. The Consent Form should be signed by the parent or guardian and member prior to the youngster participating in any League activities. Note:Talk with the Establishment owner or Manager regarding their Liability Insurance to cover possible injury or damages.
- Rules and Regulations should not only include the Rules of Darts as per the Governing Body {N.D.F.C.} but also any Rules which the Committee set up. These should contain, Rules for scoring, protests, Team profile and play, awards or individual point system. A section to address the Rules and Regulations of the Establishment where you hold the League should be included. This is important for the liability insurance, and safety of the Organization.
- Schedules: Depending on the number of members it may be necessary to develop up a playing schedule. Always involve the members to participate while doing the Schedules, this will avoid any conflict.
- Rosters: This will also apply as to the Schedules.
- Match or Game Sheets to record each individuals’ progress. Posting a weekly result sheet will only serve to heighten the groups’ competitive spirit and friendly rivalries.
Age Groups
As in all Youth oriented programs we strive for the best, the Dart program is no different. We endeavor to teach the young players the skills of the game together with the sport and competition, while still maintaining a level of enjoyment. The age levels for most Youth Dart Leagues are similiar to other minor sporting activities:
- Novice: 9 plus to 11 years
- Junior: 12 to 15 years
- Senior: 16 to 19 years of age.
It is possible these age levels may overlap depending on the skill of the youth in most cases Directors will encourage the Younger players to play with the older ones. The Leagues offer some travel to area Tournaments against other Youth Leagues with one of the goals being the Provincial Youth Championships held each year during March break.
