ADVANCED/TECH DIVING INSTRUCTION

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE

Ian Marshall has been teaching diving for 35 years, most of which were based from his dive shop, Rogersport Pro Dive, which was in Oakville, Ontario. He became an OUC/ACUC instructor in 1967, and went on to instruct for CMAS in 1978, NAUI in 1982 and IANTD in 1993. He has a background in commercial diving and has trained in excess of 3,000 students to most levels of diving.

In 1989, he completed a full cave diving course in Florida, which radically changed his attitude toward diving and his methods of instruction. The thrust of his instruction had always been the standard, buddy-based system, which is still stressed in the majority of entry-level courses. He now saw the importance of self-reliance and self-sufficiency to the individual, combined with the ability to give buddy-support. While his entry-level students had completed their courses with these abilities due to an intensive training program, he began to stress the attitude and philosophy of independence, not co-dependance. The IANTD certification programs outlined here lend themselves to this philosophy.

In 1990, Rogersport was closed due to the retirement of his partners, and Ian has since concentrated on more advanced and technical training of students. His teaching methods are extremely comprehensive and intensive, and designed to instill this independence in others, while giving them a healthy respect for the problems which can occur and the methods of dealing with them.

As of December 2002, Ian has RETIRED from Active Instruction.
