WORKSHOPS 

 

CALLIGRAPHY & ILLUMINATION

Discover the art of beautiful hand-writing and learn the historic Uncial script from the 4th Century. The art of illumination (the embellishment of a letter with paint and gold) will be illustrated with a slide lecture and then practiced. A simple project will incorporate your newly acquired skills.

 

OPEN STUDIO

Join fellow-artists and creative seekers on Tuesday mornings to practice your art in a nurturing and fun environment. The instructor paints with the class and offers assistance to all. Students can participate in exercises in colour, composition and experimental techniques if they choose.

 

INTRODUCTION TO OILS

Oil painting is explained and demonstrated right from the opening of the tubes to the finishing of a painting. Materials are provided for a very nominal cost.

 

  INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOURS

This is a class for absolute beginners where the class will result in a finished painting with an Asian influence. All new skills can be incorporated into future projects and all techniques are transferable to a subject of your own choosing. Come, have fun and amaze yourself!

 

INTRODUCTION TO PORTRAIT PAINTING

Portrait artist Mori McCrae captures the essence of character in her work. Learn and experiment with her in a lively “direct painting” approach. A live model will be present. Oils and acrylic paints will be used. Some art experience is suggested.

 

UNEXPECTED MASTERPIECES

Step outside the bounds of your usual approach to art and (re)discover what you really love in form, colour, texture, composition and different mediums. All materials provided. Come to play and to have fun.

 

INK AND WASH

Degas did it, now you can too! Learn the art of fine line ink drawing and gorgeous washes with Jim Kerr. A very useful and beautiful addition to the repertoire of painting techniques.

 

 JEWELRY 101

Learn simple loops in wire bending and soldering (yes you can!) that are be used to make wonderful, creative and personal earrings, broaches, bracelets or necklaces. Lavish yourself and loved ones! Materials are included.

 

PENDANT ASSEMBLY for a “loaded” charm bracelet

Creating a bracelet with objects meaningful to you gives jewelry another dimension. Learn to assemble many small pendants and attach them to silver or gold bracelets.

 

CUSTOM MADE POLYMER BEADS

There comes a time in jewelry making when only your own custom beads will do. Learn to make unique polymer beads that completely transcend the medium with artist and jeweler Audi Johnson.

 

SLUMPED GLASS PENDANTS

Forming slumped glass pendants creates jewelry that’s utterly unique. Learn this art form with Tina Bois at her Jordan glass studio.( Work must be kiln fired and will be delivered the next day.)

 

“THE ART OF THE BATH”

SOAP MAKING

Back by overwhelming demand, learn the fascinating traditional techniques of soap making with Lisa McBay. Students assist in the demonstration and learn to also make bath salts, salves, essential oils and balms. Everyone goes away with recipes and samples! Class size is limited so register early.

THE”QUIET”ART RETREAT

Delve completely into your art without distractions. Enjoy company or solitude as you reflect in a beautiful, safe and nurturing environment. Take time for introspection and contemplation while having the option to participate in creative art-related morning exercises and guidance with your work in the afternoons if you choose. Remember what moves you as an artist and re-commit yourself to living a creative life in all its forms. Some materials, tea and sweets are included.

 

INTRODUCTION TO POTTERY

This is a 6 week intensive introduction to wheel thrown pottery. As there are only 2 people in the class this is a unique opportunity to learn one on one with potter Dean Levesque. You’ll learn the nature of different clays, throwing techniques, trimming and glaze firing. There is an opportunity to go on after this first session to more advanced clay work.

 

“OLD TIME RADIO PLAY”

Bring out the performer in you and enjoy the thrill of creating a homemade radio drama. Directed by actor / producer and writer Barbara Worthy, you will discuss story lines, plots and characters, do warm ups and theatre games, create sound effects and finally record the play and receive a CD copy of the production.(The class for seniors 60+ is 9am-12noon for 5 days. The adult class is 9am-3pm for 5 days.)

 

ACTING FOR LIFE

This is a series of 5 workshops designed to enhance your confidence, voice, self-image and communication skills at home, work and in relationships. Using the methods from the “Actors Toolbox” with actor/producer and writer Barbara Worthy, think of this as summer camp in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

 

FINDING YOUR VOICE( in Life and in Art.)

A practical guide to using the voice in all areas of life, from the boardroom to the bedroom…the podium to the living room. Discover how breathing, relaxation and muscular control all affect the quality of your voice. In this 2 day workshop you’ll learn simple ways to free your voice and gain vocal control in everyday life. Afternoons will be spent translating your growing vocal freedom into art-related exercises designed to finding your “voice” in art.

  

THE “ART SPA”

Enjoy 5 days of reflection, exploration and relaxation in a safe, beautiful and nurturing environment. Mornings will be spent doing creative art-related exercises and afternoons you’ll have the luxury of no distractions while you pursue your own work with guidance if you choose. Every afternoon you’ll enjoy relaxation therapy with Jody Evans and a Creative Release session with David Rourke. Some art materials, teas and sweets are included.

 

THE PAINTERLY ARTS

In this three day retreat you will have the opportunity to try three different mediums: watercolour, oil and calligraphy. It’s suitable for both beginners and those with experience. All materials are provided and experimental exercises are included with the classic approach.

 

THE PLASTIC ARTS

This eclectic three day retreat offers the opportunity to experience slumped glass making, raku pottery firing, polymer glass bead making and jewelry wirework and assembly. All materials are provided.
