Tourism Around Niagara
Niagara-on-the-Lake / Niagara Falls / The Niagara Region

General Information

The Canadian/U.S. border follows the entire length of the Niagara River, from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, with the international border crossings running east-west. From the Niagara escarpment, midway from Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL), you can see Brock's monument on Queenston Heights. This area of the Niagara River features the Gorge, with the rapids at the bottom of it, and the Whirlpool nearby.

The Great Gorge Trip is a interesting elevator ride to a walkway beside the lower rapids. Ten minutes away by foot is Spanish Areo Car. This is a exciting and breath taking cable ride over the Whirlpool itself, with an excellent view of the Gorge and lower rapids.

South river two miles are the exhillarating American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls. The Maid of the Mist excursion is a boat ride that brings you into the turbulent waters at the base of the Falls. To get a glimpse of the Falls from behind, there is the Scenic Tunnels attraction at the Table Rock House Restaurant and Gift Shop. Located on the rim of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls (the most awesome view), you can suit up in yellow raincoats and elevator ride to the base of the falls to follow a trail behind a cascade of falling water!

On the U.S. side is the Cave of the Winds on Goat Island where you can walk around rocks at the base of the American Falls. You also can opt to take a catwalk under a small side shoot of the American Falls known as the Bridal Veil Falls. An additional attraction on the U.S. side is Devil's Hole with a path that takes you down into the gorge to the edge of the river.

The U.S. side boasts excellent shopping opportunities as well. The Rainbow Centre and The Factory Outlet Mall in Niagara Falls, N.Y. - both offering free parking.

Most of all, whatever side you are on - don't forget to see the Falls at night which are beautifully illuminated in a rainbow of colours starting at 9:00-9:30 pm. For the best views visit the observation decks of either the Skylon or Minolta Towers - or perhaps while having a late romantic supper in one of their dining rooms.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Niagara-on-the-Lake is the birth place of Upper Canada. For over two centuries (since 1871), the town has glowed with a special grace and confidence that comes with age and generations of admirers.

The Old Town was influenced not only by the gracious English manner and architecture, but the time honoured tradition of Bed and Breakfast. Whatever ideas were adopted along the way, today's Niagara-on-the-Lake has a style very much its own.

The Shaw Festival Theatre has helped bring old Niagara into international focus over the past thirty years. But even before Shaw was born and the town was called Newark, residents have opened their Georgian and Victorian homes to grateful guests who have succumbed to the subtle charms of this 19th century haven from the outside world.

As you might expect, theatre-lovers and other tourists alike, enjoy both the day and night ambience of the town. The quaint shops, pubs (try the Angel Inn - thought to be haunted) and eateries, lakeside picnicing and golfing, and overall relaxing atmosphere are all here for the taking.

We should warn you as well, that Niagara-on-the-Lake can be habit forming. One night might lead to two or even three, and you may want to return again and eventually often. Should this curious, albeit intriguing feeling come over you, we can only recommend that you give into it.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls has earned a place in the hearts of anyone who has marvelled at the breathtaking beauty of both the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Nearly twenty million people visit the Falls year round. This awesome spectacle is an undeniably captivating experience that is quite impossible to adequately explain or ever forget. Why not join us during the Winter Festival of Lights.

But if you thought Niagara was just the Falls, have we got news for you. Choose whatever niche of Niagara suits your mood at the time. If you don't feel up to the thrill of a ride beneath the Falls on the Maid of the Mist, why not consider a relaxing stroll along the Falls in beautiful Victoria Park. Or perhaps a spine chilling ride on Dragon Mountain roller coaster at Marineland and Game Farm would be to your liking. Alternatively, you might like to visit Niagara's newest natural wonder - The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory or take an exciting helicopter ride over Niagara Falls, do some shopping, or having a relaxing lunch at the Secret Garden restaraunt over looking the Falls.

We could go on about the endless ways to enjoy Niagara, especially the night life and many other Attractions, Dining, Entertainment, Shopping and Events in and around Clifton Hill. But we think that it's better if you find out for yourself. The important thing to remember about anything you choose to do, is that Niagara is better when shared with someone you love.

The Niagara Region

The B&B custom began to spread around the peninsula as visitor's became aware of the region's other unique faces. Vineland, St. Catharines, Port Colborne and Fort Erie, for example, each have their own personalities.

Marvel at enormous ocean going ships easing into one of the locks in the Welland Canal or spread a picnic out on a blanket and share some quiet moments gazing out at the sailboats gliding by on Lakes Erie or Ontario. You can't leave the peninsula without sampling some fine local wine during a winery tour or biting into some juicy fruit just picked at a local orchard. You might go all day and have a hard time spending any paper money.

Rather than tell you all about everything else there is to see and do in the Region, we suggest that you visit The Regional Municipality of Niagara to discover what makes each area exciting for you. We're sure you'll find something to every one's liking in your group.
