i decided to use a broken carbon hockey sick to make a great tiller extensoin well i finished it here are the pics this one you can see after i just sanded off all the paint you can see its quite dull finish i weighed it all the way threw the process the start it was 230g after the sanding it was 205g this is after i applied 2 very light coats of a clear coat to make the carbon pop its weight is 215g before i attached it i did a flex test i put it over my knee and tried to bend it. its solid i dont think i even moved it here it is done and attached to the tiller i decided to put a small piece of UHMW inside so the screws had something to bite to i also put a rubber hockey grip on it. you could use foam which would make it lighter. final weight 310g. Final build cost = stick was free it wasent my borken stick rubber grip $14 paint $6 holtallen fitting $15 and a small chunck of uhmw which i had total cost $35 and one hour labour [This message has been edited by clracer (edited January 02, 2008).] IP: 64.231.156.61 |

Colin, it looks great. Good photo presentation, too.Was this project a preparation for the Mid-Winters in Florida? IP: 65.93.74.102 |

This is a very good idea. I have many old sticks around including wood, aluminum, graphite composite and wood. Since Jason Spezza is using a wood stick, I think I'll attempt one with wood. Great idea Colin.IP: 216.106.100.157 |

This is Sapphire's tiller extension. It is an Aldila Longwood Ultralite golf club shaft. There are no markings, but it may be graphite. The pintle on the end was salvaged from a telescopic aluminum tiller extension that disolved in the bilge one summer. And like Colin's that is a chunk of UHMW holding the hardware together. It's not as robust as Colin's. Total weight is 198 grams. If it's not stowed properly in the cabin, then one day it is likely to weigh 1/2 as much.

Nice work Colin. A very Canadian solution. Hockey sticks also make a good flag staff. The best ones I've seen keep the blade on the end. We're looking for an extendable tiller so I can sit up on the deck next to the cabin or go below while steering to adjust the keel. I haven't found one yet that when retracted would fit along the short Sanpiper tiller. D'Arcy, Shortwave IP: 74.12.79.39 |

Colin, that is really Canadian!
The fitting on Sapphire's tiller is from a Seaway telescopic tiller extension. It had a cork ball about 1-1/2" diameter on its end. I could not find this Los Angeles company on the internet. They are probably defunct.

...but is the angle of the tangent of the extension to the tiller greater than 93 degrees ? (tee hee).I like it ! I used a Torspo hollow laminated wood stick as a Laser tiller for years. Happy New Years my Friend Steve IP: 72.38.183.111 |
