If I was looking for a trailer for a Sandpiper 565 again... I'd look for one rated at 3000 lbs from a reliable manufacturer.
On the way to Rousseau Raid last August 01, Dennis and I weighed my rig at the Salisbury, New Brunswick westbound highway weigh station.
results...
1st go boat & truck...
axle 1 1040 kg
axle 2 1050 kg
axle 3 950 kg (boat trailer)
------------
total 3040 kg

2nd weigh... truck only..
axle 1 1090 kg
axle 2 890 kg
-------------
total 1980 kg

note: motor, gas can and anchor rode in truck bed.

You can play with the figures but we know that the boat trailer combo weighed 1060 kg. (2337 lbs)
When I bought the trailer new in June of 5006 I disconnected it from the truck and weighed it at a Nova Scotia highway weigh station. It was 280 kg (or 617 pounds)

So...1060 minus 280 = 780 kg or 1720 lbs for the boat without motor, gas or anchor.

My breakdown experiences with my trailer are documented from posts last August & Sept.
Word to the wise...go a bit heavier rather than lighter.

note: when weighing with entire rig...close to 200 pounds trailer weight is transfered to the truck via tongue weight on the trailer hitch. You can also see how the front end lightens up a bit with the trailer attached.

Hi Don, I was just going over your figures thats a well balanced rig you had there it must have drove nice. Sandpipers are supposed to be 1200 lbs you have it coming in at 1720 lbs, you havent got a big screen tv, beer fridge, and Lazy-boy recliner inside? Any thoughts why CL is out by 520 lbs?

Good question with my boat. At one point a couple years ago, Tom at CL admitted that the boats were probably closer to 1400 lbs rather than 1200. If you then start adding boat cushions (full set inside plus cockpit for me), the mast, boom, sails & rigging...an empty cooler, a small tool box, boat hook paddle ..and you're creeping up.
I also had the stern rail and the lifeline option.
I don't know if waterlogging could be blamed. The boat sat on its trailer from October 2006 until the weigh-in August 01 2007.

I read some where that back in the 70's building with fiberglass was a newer concept and that builders tended to over do it with the amount of material they used. Thats good for us, stronger and better built, you can say that about most things nowadays? I think I need to find some scales, it would be nice to know how much we are dragging around.
