The Martin 16 had a intertnational regatta in St Pete last weekend. I am 100 miles south. Two sailors from Calgary had their boats in Charlotte Harbor to prictice. The first name were Grahm and Roger. Didn't get a chance to talk only passing by comments.
A friend down here is selling them. He isn't promoting as a handicapper craft. He is getting some of the older keelboat racers interested. We have a lot of them here and finding crews seems to be a problem. Dennis has his boats set up for racing primarily.
I went with him for some local racing his 3rd boat was to be used by a potential buyer. We sailed together. It is a lot different than a regular sloop. The boats are very quick and singlehanded sitting in the cockpit all 3 sails can be handled.
Next week I am trying to get to race one myself. I will let you know how it goes.

Tom:

It's a small world afterall. I know those guys quite well. Graham and I were on the Board of Directors together and we were both highly involved with Mobility Cup '97 as part of the regatta committee. Of what I understand his son Steve is a dealer for the Martin 16.
Roger became involved with DSAA a few years ago and was telling me about he and Graham's intent to go down to Florida.

A few years Graham came up with a really great slogan for the Martin 16. "......sailing in a Martin is like armchair sailing". With that in mind I think the Martin 16 is great for "mature" sailors.

I was thinking how great that boat would be for an 'older' guy who isn't quite as flexible anymore. They are quite expensive..
one site listed the boats at $11,000 US
plus extras. I could see $ 20,000 CDN for the 'full meal deal'...that is trailer, outboard etc. heck...you could buy 4 nice Sandpiper 565s' for that and have your own fleet. :-)

Yes Don you're right. The Martin 16 is a very expensive boat. FYI the sip and puff model we (DSAA)have is in the neighborhood of $20,000 Cdn.

The boat is built in Sarnia Ont. About 120 miles from my Michagan Home. In Florida I can purchase the performance version for about 16k US. You are right about Graham he sat is his boat and leaned back and looked like he was riding his easy chair to a tv race. They were both good sailors.
With the centerboard down I can walk around the entire hull with the boat only listing a little, I am 190 lbs. These boats glide along with only the slightest breeze. They are also very stable in 20 knot blows with no danger of tipping.
Saturday I will try to get out again. The ice should be off the lakes soon and spring sailing shall begin. I will be back by the end of April and get ready for the sailing season.
