Wow! That boat would be a handful. Beautiful and powerful looking. Wonder if we'll see it sailing down here?

Makes me appreciate our Sandpipers, easy to use and prescratched. But a beautiful boat.

It doesn't have a mast.

Elmet3,
Maybe it doesn't need a mast. An awful lot can be accomplished by sheer determination alone.
What an awesome looking piece of machinery though.

I hate it when I forget the mast... I get to the ramp & suddenly realize it's not there... Dang!

Nice looking boat Denis but I think I'll stick to Shortwave. Despite being a tad shorter our cockpit is more comfortable.

Call me old fashioned but I think it would go faster with sails. Determination will only do so much.

Here's an update on Spirit of Canada. It's a letter from the Commodore of RCYC which I think really describes beautifully how incredible these boats and the people who sail them are.

I talked with Derek Hatfield at the boat show tonight. I think he's got a real good chance to do well. My brother is going to be helping with some of the promotion to help the Spirit of Canada team.

Derek Hatfield Sails for RCYC

Spirit of Canada at the Toronto Boat Show

I am pleased to announce that Derek Hatfield will be sailing his new Open 60, Spirit of Canada, flying the RCYC Burgee. The Club granted Derek an honourary membership in 2006 and it has now been finalized that RCYC will be Derek’s club-of-record for his racing adventures.

Derek’s ultimate goal will be to compete in the Vendée Globe round-the-world race in 2008-9. This is the toughest yacht race there is – single-handed and non-stop!

It takes tremendous courage and determination to sail around the world alone.  Only approximately 139 sailors have ever done it.  To put this in perspective, this is fewer than approximately 400 astronauts who have gone into space and the over 2500 mountaineers who have reached Mount Everest.

Spirit of Canada is the most technical sailboat ever built in Canada. Many members have visited the Spirit of Canada workshop in Cobourg over the last year and have some idea of the technology and effort that goes into the building of an Open 60. All of us will have an opportunity to see the completed hull at the Toronto Boat Show, January 13-21. Please drop by Spirit of Canada to meet Derek and wish him well. While you are there, contemplate sailing a high-performance 60 footer like that around the world, single-handed.

March will see the keel fitted on Spirit of Canada, followed by the all important roll over test that will be performed at the RCYC city basin. Spirit of Canada will be moored at the RCYC city basin this Spring until she heads for Europe to compete in the Vendée Globe qualifying races.

RCYC is proud to support Derek’s efforts and are eager to see him succeed in his quest.  His campaign thus far has no major sponsor and relies on financial contributions from individuals (all of whom get there name stenciled on Spirit of Canada’s hull). Over the coming months you will have the opportunity to offer support for the Spirit of Canada campaign at a number of events at the Club.

Spirit of Canada’s website is http://www.spiritofcanada.net/

Commodore English

The RCYC basin is at the foot of Sherbourne. I think it would be worth seeing the role over test.
