Just bought cl 14 # 1326. Sailed it yesterday and are thirlled!!! She will be in the water full-time at our dock.
We are struggling with the boom while sails are down. Already scratched top of transom once. Would like to leave boom on to save time next sail and to hold boat cover.
Not sure if a topping lift or boom crutch would be the answer. Can anyone help with ideas / drawings?
Thanks

The topping lift works just fine on my CL14. It attaches to the boom tang with a snap hook and goes to the top of the mast. It came with the rigging when I bought the boat this past winter.

See the attached link for a drawing of the boom tang. http://www.newcomb-family.org/cl14_topping_lift.htm

Bob:
Thanks for the input.
I don't see anything to attach the topping lift to at the top of our mast.
Is it an "add-on"?

Hi # 1326.
I'm sail # 1347...we're practically neighbours.
A co-worker bought my CL14 from a New Brunswick dealer in 1985 at the Halifax Int. Boat Show.

I've used two bungie cords attached to the shackle on the end of my main halyard and the
end of the boom as a rough topping lift.
It worked fine in my driveway.

The main halyard would word well as a topping lift if you only want to use it while moored.
My CL16 has a little loop at the top of the boom near the tang. I attached a line at the top of the mast and run it down through the little loop and attach it to a small cleat I attached to the boom about 14 inches forward of the tang. This allows me to let the topping lift loose while sailing and to pull it in and raise the boom as needed. I fly my ensign from the topping lift.
Good sailing Tom D.

What do you fly.....the skull & cross bones?

I have a Canadian Power& Sail Squadron flag that I was thinking of running up my starboard shroud.

At the top of the mast, on the starboard side, there is a u shaped bolt (wrong word, but I don't know what to call it) riveted in place. That is where the topping lift is tied off. I don't see it in the replacement parts list from CL Sailboats, but it can't be hard to get and install.

While we're close to talking about boat covers, does anyone have explicit instructions on how to tie the CL 16 boat cover on? My ideas continue to be inventive but (sadly) don't work too well
