I have an old CL16 #438 before the id had a date. I have 2 sets of sails, both genoas one from North Sails the other from Genco in Toronto are very simialr is size.
QUESTION Both sails DONOT go near the top of the forestay to the mast they miss by 2 feet or more. Other than illegal for racing what effect would I get to have a larger genoa?
It seems that we could get better power with the taller and maybe higher percentage genoa.
Does anyone know if it would be worth the effort and cost to have a larger one made for cruiseing? I know that fractional rigs don't have the same balance as the full rigs but this would still be fractional.
Thanks
Tom D.

Tom;

My CL 16 only has a jib (that goes as high as yours). My experience has proven that the jib and main are all I can handle when the breeze quickly picks up. Fortunately I have furling gear and it has has saved me on a few occasions. I find that given the large amount of sail area is quite substantial for cruising. I also have a spinnaker which I fly solo on light days. With the main and spinnaker, Celtic Kiss handles quite well.

I sail on a small lake about 500 acres it also has 2 very large shalow areas that the centerboatrd drags on. This does not give me a lot of time to raise and lower sails solo. I have the opportunity a few times to sail on big water and I thought a larger foresail would be nice on calm days. With 150 sqft of sail the CL16 is a powerfull boat and with the planning hull. Many larger boats don't have as much sail. I would like to try the spinnaker solo but I need the bigger lake. I have used the genny poll and sailed wing on wing solo. I have a launcher built into the forepart on the deck which I launch it without going forward. Pull the halyard and she comes right up and is ready to fly. To retrieve it I have a line attached to the center of the spinnaker that will pull it into the launcher and then I raise the jib. This description leaves out the crew and his using the spinnaker boom.
Great talking with another CL16 sailor.

Tom;

I agree, it is nice to talk to another CL 16 sailor. I am intrigued with your spinnaker launcher. Could you describe it to me? I am always looking for ideas to simplify my life.

Spinnaker Launcher:
At the starboard side on the front of the deck is a hole with a funnel shape going below deck. It doesnot taper. On the cylinder is a sleeve made of sail cloth. This comes back to the bulkhead and can reach through the bulkhead a little. The hole and sleeve are approx 8 - 10 Inches in diameter.

To set up for sailing.
Instead of a bag or basket I pull the spinnaker into the sleeve from the cockpit.
The spinnaker has a patch with a loop built into the exact center which I attach a line.
The line is feed through the hole and sleeve into the cockpit. The halyard is attached to the head and starboard/port clew/tack are attached to the guy/sheets. The spinnaker is pulled into the sleeve and the lines are just inside the hole.
To set spinnaker. Pull the halyard and up she comes. Set the boom and set the guy and sheet.
To lower.
Release the boom, slowly lower the halyard and pull the line through the sleeve as the remaining lines are eased. The spinnaker is down and ready for the next run.
Hopefully that explains how it works.
It does eliminate some of the storage space available under the deck but I never use all the space in the lazarette or under the deck anyway.

Thanks Tom;

That sounds similar to the set-up on the fireball. I'm not overly keen on drillig holes in my boat just yet, but as I become more experienced with fibreglass repair it probably won't be an issue. I like the idea of using a sleeve made of sail cloth. I was concerned about compromising storage space but the use of sail cloth probably solves that.

Where on the deck is the hole made? (How far back from the bowplate?) How long is the tag line at the center of the spinnaker foot?

Spinnaker Launcher:
The deck hole is on the starboard side, rounded triangle shape 8" wide 10" fore - aft. A solid chute curves down and back with the bottom(from bow to end) about 25".
The chute is approx. 6" in diameter at the end. From the deck hole the chute is very rounded to allow for easy sliding of the spinnaker. The hole starts appros 9 inches back of the deck bow. The edge of the hole is heavily reinforced with the deck to ensure the integrity of the deck.
The retrieval line is attached to the center of the spinnaker to draw it down so all points are at deck level.
Hope this helps, it was built as original equipment on this boat.
ALSO I have bailers and have never used them. I very seldom get any water in the cockpit and I carry a 1/2 gal bottomless (milk carton)bailer and big sponge to clean up any splash that I may get. The bailers were probably factory installed and I needed to do some epoxy repair to fix leaks.

Thanks Tom;

The more I think about a spinnaker launcher, the more I like it!!!
