I just bought a CL 16 and found that the mast step plate was rotted and fragmented when I stepped the mast. Is one necessary, what should it look like and from what material should it me made? I sailed that day anyway because the mast seems to be adequately supported.

As you found out you can sail without it.
Contact CL staff they will have the part. Mine is a plastic material (? if original) when I bought the boat there was a damaged wooden also that I tossed. The support gives the base of the mast some stability when under stress.
Good sailing tom d

My wooden one broke the day I stepped the mast.

The plywood (approx 3.5" x 3.5") piece, with a hole cut out in the center to match the fitting in the mast foot, looked a bit shakey on my CL14. I should have ordered a new plastic version when I bought a new centerboard 3 years ago.
The plywood seems to have swelled a bit, as the mast fitting won't fit into the hole.
I may just take it out and apply either my
router, spin saw, or Dremel tool to it and enlarge the hole a bit. Wonder what tool the boys at CL would use?

Hello,

We router the mast steps when we build them, if your wood has swelled - a coars file (for wood) should do the trick easily with great results.

Cheers

Thanks Cody....
I don't have a rasp or wood file, but it's time I invested in a couple.
