Malcolm:

A little while ago I posted a question about oarlock installation. Since then an idea has surfaced which I believe deserves some merit.
What has been proposed is a "sleeve" that fits right over the gunwale. This sleeve is constructed for the purpose of fitting a my CL 16 for oars. The sleeve is built from a piece of 2X10 and a 2X6. The 2X10 is placed on top of the gunwale and the 2X6's are screwed to both edges of the 2X10. This will give us a U-shape that fits snuggily over the gunwale. The 2X10 can then have another piece of wood placed on top of it to provide proper thickness for the length of the oarlock. At this point we can measure and drill holes for oarlock placement. The best thing about this is that we don't have to drill holes in our boat.
Curvature of the boat will require some shaping of the wood to match the hull. Once this is done, the sleeve is complete. You may wish to put thin carpet on the inner surfaces of the sleeve to prevent scratching the hull when rowing. I also think the sleeve's friction will the hull will keep the it in place. I plan to use oars that come apart at the centre for storage purposes. As of yet I have not built this design because I am so far away from "Celtic Kiss" so if anyone on the board does build this "rowing sleeve" please let us know how you constructed it. I for one am most interested in what you have to say.

Hi Robert,

Sounds like an interesting idea. Only question I would have is what is to keep the sleeve from moving forward (or more likely, backward) along the rail with each stroke of the oar? Seems to me it would have to be held in place somehow? Any ideas? Could it be linked to the track for the jib fairleads some how?

I am thinking that if the sleeve is properly shaped to the hull, friction (a tight fit) will hold it in place.
