Hello Tom;
I have one question for you. Are you happy with the topping lift idea? I think a topping lift will give the boom proper support when reefed. I drove through Michigan in 2000. I wish I could have spent more time there.

I use the topping lift only when setting sails or motoring. The lift is attached to the top of the mast, and I attached a small block to the aft of the boom. Forward of this is screwed a cleat. The lift has about 2 feet of extra line so it can be loose when not being used. I also use it while the boat is at rest either at a dock or anchored. I don't have any reefing yet. Sailing alone I don't go out if there is over 15 knots of wind. tom d

Tom;
Would I be correct in assuming that when sailing the aft end of the topping lift is taken forward and cleated to the mast?

The boom end of the lift is attached to the cleat on the boom. I let it run loose when not in use and it hangs along the leech of the sail. This way I can easily set it from aft end then move forward to lower sails or whatever. Just pull on the liftline and hitch it to the cleat. I thought of hanging penants from it but I don't know the proper procedure for penants. tom d

Very clever. That would certainly save a step or two and would allow you to fly your national flag.
