I was wondering if both CL 16 & 14 models have hull drain plugs (or are they full of styrofoam) in case of leaky hull.

I was also wondering which model is better for a thirteen year-old sailor who has been sailing for 3 years.

Thanks.

Rad-

I've got a CL 14. I haven't had occassion to open the hull up myself, but my understanding is that there is floatation material both under the bench seats and in the bow area.

There are, however, hull plugs for draining out what water may get caught between the outside and inside skin. There's another thread here on the board where people talk about placement, number, purpose, etc.

My old CL16 has a drain plug that drains into the lazarette. It is to drain any water than may leak into the enclosed bottom from the centerboard pivot. I seldom get any water there. I had the boat moored for a week and not a drop drained out when I opened the plug and tipped the trailer. Also I open the little ports on the side of the centerboard trunk whenever the boat is on the trailer.

Hi Cdn. Sailor;

In my honest opinion I would go with the CL 16. I bought mine in '97 and have nothing but good things to say about it. All or most sailors at one time or another get a disease called "two-footitis" If you start out with the 14 you'll eventually want to go to the 16. Save yourself the headache now and start with the 16.

The 16 is also quite common on the used boat market. Just look at the board and see how many people are looking to buy the 16.

The 16 also has wider gunwales making it easier to sit on, has ample storage in the stern lazarette and forepeak. The storage is a big issue for me because I like to go camping in secluded coves.

Th Cl16 is a terrific boat for sailors of all skill levels too !!

Happy Sails and Fair winds

I struggled with which model to buy 2 years ago.
I went with the CL 14 because I knew the previous owner and the boat was perfect. Also, I couldn't count on my wife to crew...so I thought the 14 would be easier to right if capsized.
It was also $ 1k cheaper than the CL 16 I was thinking about.
If I was doing it again...I would take a closer look at the 16. Being a fairly heavy,
full sized adult, I could probably handle the 16 with a little practice.
The past 3 summers I have done all the sailing I need on a Mirage 33...so the boat sits sadly on it's trailer in my driveway.

I have owned a CL 11, CL 16 and sailed the CL 14 and prefer it. The 14 is large enough to carry two large men comfortably (the 11 is crowded). It seems to me the main difference between the 14 and the 16 is the aft lazerette (sp?) which I found to be a nuisance when attempting to use the boat with an electric motor.

Cheers,

Ron
