I am thinking of buying a new CL 16, but there are none around here (Massachusetts) that I have seen so I have some questions. I'm down sizing off of a J24 to something I can sail in our protected bay(either alone or with another person). I am wondering how much of a performance sailer the CL 16 is? Would the trapize option be worth it?(I have a fifteen year old who only sails with us if it is blowing and exciting). Any information on her sailing characteristics would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, .....it depends on what you term Performance sailing. I find that the CL16 is great for both racing and cruising. BUT you are used to a much larger boat and you will find that the CL16 is REALLY small in comparison. If you are interested in going on little camping trips etc., the CL is the boat to go with. If you're racing the only CL 16 at the club, you will always be racing on corrected times etc. to which the "discussions" amongst racers never end.

If you have a youthful crew that really likes excitement, I would suggest a catamaran to you. They are fast, roomy, you can trapeze on them and are probably plentiful where you are. If you can handle a J24 I'm sure you can handle a cat.

I hope this helps
