I have an older (1981)CL14. I am thinking of rebedding the bowplate and mainsheet post on this hull as the bedding compound is crumbling. Can the attachment screws for these two fittings be removed and replaced without fear of losing a nut or something else vital inside the hull? I also have one screw on the bowplate that won't snug up. Any ideas for a fix?

There are access plates that you can buy at marine stores. They allow you to put a hole in the fiberglass hull (the inner hull), and install the outer ring of this plate. Then you screw the cover into the outer ring, which allows you access to the area between the hulls.
I don't know a whole lot about the CL14, but on the CL16, these covers look very similar to the ones that allow access to the centerboard bolt.

CL sells these covers as well. Not very expensive. I haven't installed it yet, though.

I'd still consider getting a couple of extra nuts in the (unlikely?) event that you drop one while doing the work and it lodges somewhere down inside the tank where you just can't quite reach it.

I replaced my mainsheet block once: Dropped several nuts which I couldn't find. Several years later they started to roll around when we turned the boat over! It's a bit like matching socks in a pay laundry.

Maybe this is more of a technical question for the CL staff on the construction of the CL14 boats. What I really need to know is whether these screws are threaded into loose or fixed nuts within the deck, or are they just screwed into the deck with some kind of reinforced backing? I am aware of the inspection ports you have been discussing, but they may not be needed. Any help from the CL folks?
