Since there is so much labour involved to make a great looking long lasting repair in marine applications I would recommend the use of the highest quality fillers and resins that you can find. Polyester-based auto body putty is readily available but I wouldn't use it...especially not for underwater areas.

I would like to patch small nicks and scrapes that are above the waterline. Do you recommend mixing coloured gelcoat stuff, or can epoxy patching materials be coloured? Or is there a better solution?

I'm glad I asked about the use of autobody filler before I did anything silly. My hull as about a 2 inch scratch in it that doesn't appear to be too deep. That area of the hull is only in the water when I'm heeled over (though I try to keep Celtic Kiss as flat as I can in the heavy stuff)

Gelcoat repair resin can be tinted to closely match your existing gelcoat colour. It takes some trial and error but is possible. I would rather use gelcoat than epoxy for these kind of shallow scratch and ding repairs.

Here's a link to Noah's in Toronto. There's a Q & A forum there which may be helpful to you.
