Hey guys...

So the original blue on the topside (as well as the rest of the boat) has been painted over with something (?) that has seriously faded and dulled (chalked)over time.

Does anyone know of the best way to get rid of the coating or is it best to just really clean it and then paint over it? The surface is fine - it is not peeling and there are no blisters etc.

I will be researching online by myself but I appreciate any ideas you can share.

Tks,

Gracie

Without knowing the specifics I'd start with either a rubbing compound or fibreglass cleaner.

Look at the picture of my hull, before and aftet. The previous owners have painted the hull and the paint was very ugly. So I have sanded it with something like a 120 grit at first to remove the most part of the paint, but you have to be carefull if you don't want to remove the original gelcoat.

After that I used a smaller grit till I removed all the white paint. After I used a dry or wet 1000 , 1500 and 2000 grit with water. The result was very satisfing.

But maybe it would be anather thing with the deck with al the samll lines on it.

If you onli want to restore the paint, you can use the 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit and after that put a good wax, or with a compound and a wax.

Good luck with your project

Wow!

Thanks Francois, your boat looks great. We noticed the picture of your boat in the roll call, well done.

I will try the fine sandpaper idea you mentioned. I would like to know if the blue and red painted side in your picture of before and after is the original paint underneath. Did you sand and uncover this blue and then restore it? Or did you repaint?

Thanks again for the great pics and advice.

I have sanded all the white paint, the blue and red painted side is the original paint underneath. The first part of the blue paint shine more becose at this place I have tested the method with the fine sandpaper and the wax.

At some pleces in the blue paint we can see little red spot, is places I was'nt enough carefull, I sanded to much and i reached tre red paint under the blue. When they manufactured the hull they apllicated a stripe of tape in the moulding of the hull, they shoot the blue gelcoat, after they removed the tape and after the shoot the red gelcoat and after the fiberglass.
