A few weeks ago I posted a message about dumping a CL14 and getting going again. I had a great response and I'm confident enough that I plan on buying a CL16!

I will be living on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and plan to sail the CL16 there.

I know this is a BIG ocean and obviously won't take the 16 out when the winds or waves are 'threatening'. So besides the obvious, does anyone have any comments about sailing on the Pacific - or - am I just plain crazy?

Thanks

I have sailed on some large bodies of water, Lake Michigan, and Charlotte Harbor on the Florida Gulf coast.
A 16 foot boat is not designed to sail in big waves. If you have a bay or harbor that is somewhat protected from big waves you should be Ok. Wave size is not determined by the wind only. Fetch is the term used for the distance waves travel with the wind to build up in size.
Good luck and great sailng tom d

Waves are not "too" much problem until they become large enuff to:
1. Knock the boat off the wind when beating...forcing you let out the sails, let the boat gather some speed (steerage way) and then steer upwind again.

or

2. Just scare the heck out of you when you're deep in a trough and can't see the horizon or land at all!

Dinghys are happiest in more protected waters, away from the effects of long sea swells and the really big waves that are generated away out to sea. Try to stick to sailing in bays and behind land prominences.

Good luck....and don't troll any body parts in the water.....

see http://www.imagic.demon.co.uk/openboat/

A local guy sailed his 16 foot Wayfarer
from Dartmouth NS to Cape Breton.
That's a lot of wide open Atlantic.
I'm sure he was careful to check the weather on a regular basis.
