On very windy days, I change out my 45 ft2 genoa for a 5 oz. jib of 32 ft2 that has a reefing foot to reduce it to about 22 ft2.
Since this is a fractional rig, what best to balance the mainsail?
I have one set of reefpoints that brings me down from 95 ft2 to abut (?) 65 ft2.

If you have experience sailing a CL under reduced sail, and figured out a balance, I'd welcome an exchange with you either on this forum or privately. It seems that the 2:1 ratio of main to headsail gives up at a certain point.

In a really stiff wind, jib only behaves better than reefed main only, which does not point well to wind.

replies appreciated

Hi Tom:

I've had quite a bit of experience with heavy air (25knts) and found that "Celtic Kiss" handles very well with the jib and what I think is a main from a Flying Junior. Though I have reef points in the main, I prefer to just use a smaller sail. The luff of that sail is only 15 ft and approx 7 1/2 feet at the foot.

And if I'm caught in a sudden blow with the full main, I can furl the jib and sail only the back half of the main. (Leave the luff to flutter.) It may not look pretty but its safe.

Do you have any ideas on installing oar-locks?
