Well here I am in my beloved Nova Scotia enjoying great sailing weather. The other day I tried some heavy air sailing by jib alone. I ventured out in 25-30 knot northwesterly winds and had a fantastic run. The GPS was reading 6.7 knots while running downwind and reached 8.7 knots when surfing the 5-6 foot waves. It was a bit nerve wracking at first but by the second mile of the eight mile run it was pure fun. When I reached my intended waypoint I furled the jib and raised my pre-reefed main for a 3.5 mile beam reach to a favorite island of mine. Again the GPS was reading 5.5 knots in a confused sea. Surprisingly enough not much spray was taken aboard given the conditions. The only damage was to a batten which broke in 5 pieces. I quickly put in a spare and beached the boat in a somewhat sheltered cove on the lee side of the island, cracked open a beer and thoroughly enjoyed my surroundings. My Grandfather used to take my father to this particular island when he was a young boy.

The only problem I encountered was that the salt spray irritated a contact lense so I could only steer with one eye while keeping clear of two ships. I'm glad I have my radar reflector attached to the top of my topping lift.

My return was made under a clear starry sky with a 10-15 knot westerly breeze. Of course I made a perfect docking a nobody was around because it was 12:30 am.

Total trip was 20.1 nm. (NOW THATS WHAT I CALL A SHAKEDOWN CRUISE)

On another front, I've installed lazy jacks and am tweaking them for optimal performance. As my computer access is limited it could be awhile before you see me here again. I am preparing for a trip to St.`Pierre/Miquelon en route to the south coast of Newfoundland in a C&C 32. I'm sure that all my dinghy experience will be an asset. You make me feel like a wimp bailing out on the Mirage 33 in this crappy weather.
Odd though, The lady at work who has a Bluenose up on the strait said the weather improves once you get past Truro.
Best of luck and good sailing on your 'Big Adventure' to NFLD.
