Sailing is over for us in the north. I have sent my mailsail to the canvas shop to sew the reefing patches. I used fiberglass carpet tape. Two layers on each side of the sail and one layer of sail patch tape. I overlappped the seams and put grommets in. I am having the canvas shop put the big 1/2" grommets in the luff and leach. The window that they sewed into my jib turned out very nice. It seems to be exactly like the old roller furling jib. That jib was left on the boat by a previous owner and the leach is rotten. Many patches and resewing but it is not savable. Both sets of sails are old and should be replaced but being a frugal(my family uses CHEAP) person I will get as much use out of them as possible. In a few weeks I will be heading south for the winter so my desing of the boom tent will be delayed until spring. Again the frugalness is taking over I don't want to spend a lot of money for a tent that I may use only once or twice.

Did you say cheap??
Sounds like you're living the life of an 'international playboy'
You sail up here all summer and then winter down south.
Cheap to me means turning the heat down & making the family bundle up to save on heating costs. I've been trying for years to 'toughen 'em up', but meet resistance at every turn. It's a struggle.
Can't impress them with how tough it was in the 50's...blah, blah!

I read a book some years ago about a couple who were cruising around the world (and had done so for years). They had a very basic, easy to maintain boat and lived frugally.
By living this way they could live off a small investment income. They defined being wealthy as simply "Earning more than they were spending".
The bottom line is they're sailing, not working. That's wealth. I think about this when I've had a tough day at work.
Some guys spend their whole life working and saving for that ultimate high tech cruising boat. Meanwhile your're out there Tom living the dream. Keep at it.
