Hi
I need to put a small outboard on a CL-14. I haven't bought the bracket yet, but a friend has a 2Hp Honda for sale.
This motor and many like it are offered in short and long shaft. Which is better for the CL-14
Thanks
Jim

I asked Tom, CL Boatworks, the same question a year ago. He recommended the short shaft. Said the long shaft would drag in the water while sailing.

I use a 2.2 Honda 4 stroke on my sandpiper. It does well and a short shaft to boot. Only problem, no reverse or neutral. On the bigger lakes I use a 4HP Suzuki 4 stroke, with neutral and reverse. Both short shafts for that verry reason, the long shaft would be in the water even in a tilt postion.

Not me Sid !
I have a Merc 4.5 longshaft. I raise the o/b mount, then tilt the motor, and it's free and clear of the water. No draggy the motor !
As soon as I'm making way under sail, or sooner, I kill the motor and pop it up!
You're sure you can't get yours out?

My Suzuki is a 2003, so its as long as an older long shaft. With the outboard mount up, and the motor tilted it still comes very close to touching the water. The old honda I don't have to tilt and it clears the water with the mount in the up position.

I'm loacted inside of a Suzuki dealer so I was able to buy the new motor at cost.

This is interesting. The Evinrude 6hp I have is long shaft (20" from mounting bracket to cavitation plate). The previous owner told me not to tilt it, as it might be hard to start quickly. Even with the mount all the way up..part of the prop might drag in the water. I'll have to test this out.

I have a 2HP, two stroke, short shaft outboard motor on my CL16 and this has proven quite adequate. When I bring it along on long sails, I keept it stored forward. Size and weight matter a lot, get the smallest and shortest. Don't forget, if you capsize when the motor is running, the motor will be toast. The sharp propeller blades sticking out back pose quite a hazard.
