Saturday morning was the start of the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the Whitbread). Virtual Spectator became available for download on the last day. A live audio commentary was broadcast over the web, complete with snap, crackle and all the excitement of a hockey broadcast. The new 70-foot, canting keel ocean racers have just a few more crew than Eric during the Rendezvous race and after a few hours have already sailed further than Darcy in a full season. Richard Clarke of Toronto was to be on the Spanish boat, movistar, but his name is not on the roster. Curtis Blewett of Vancouver is the foredeck of the Disney-sponsored boat, Pirates of the Caribbean. I know of no other Canadians.

Remember; it's not the speed of the boat but the quality of the sail. We love gunk-holing along the shoreline at 4 knots. I don't really like the idea of dodging ice-bergs in the dark at 20 knots. I sure would love to sail on one of these speed freaks for an afternoon though. It's an amazing race. As I undersdand it, these 70 footers have to be tested for floatation capabilities before they are allowed to race. The hull is placed upside down in the water and the boat must right itself. Good idea. At times, these boats are farther away from help than most astonauts are when in space. D'Arcy, Shortwave

They have a downloadable program where you can track what the boat is doing, in virtual reality.. it is neat. These Open 70s are amazing. Fast is the only word for them. There are a couple great articles comparing them to the Open 60s on the Volvo Ocean race website. A friend of mine raced on an Open 50 this year, I saw him sail in in 12 kts of wind, but doing 17 kts. Truly amazing boats. There are a couple boats that have already sustained major damage in this race, they are comtemplating going into port to repair. Updates regularly on the website!!! ------------------ Rob Belliveau 1976 Sandpiper 565 "CoolBreeze" Halifax NS Dartmouth Yacht Club

Poor Paul Cayard... Screwed out of a slot in the European Cup -- I mean the AMERICA'S Cup -- and has to settle for a ride on a Mickey Mouse boat named after for animated movie... A bad movie, at that!

Volvo Ocean Race on TV.Rogers Sportsnet on Bell Express Vu is running weekly 1/2 hour update/highlight shows on Saturdays/Sundays. The show is available 2 or 4 times across the weekend schedule. The sailing clips show very wet conditions. Life on board these sleds looks extreme.
