My cl 16 was licenced by the previous owner but I have not transferred the licence to my name.'the reg numbers on the bow are barely legible and in need of replacement.
it is my understanding that this registration is not manditory for boats under a certain size and does not pertain the my boat as it has no motor.
am I correct in my assumptions?
should I register?
do I need to have liability insurance on my boat?
I live in Ontario but I believe we are talking about federal law anyway.
looking forward to your comments

As I understand it....
as long as your outboard is under 10 hp
there is no requirement to license.
But with our Fed gov't it's best to stay tuned.....could change in the future.

I am in full agreement with Don on this one.
Under current laws we are not required to register anything under 10 hp. That is one of the reasons why there are so many 9.9 hp motors around.

But since your boat has already been registered by the previous owner I'm not sure if there is an onus on you to change the registration. To my knowledge there isn't a fee involved with this process but my suggestion to you is to contact the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron and ask them.

All you need to do is go to a Customs office and fill out a short transfer form. I don't think there is any fee.
Since the boat is registered, (not licensed)by the previous owner, I think it would be in your best interest to transfer registration, because the number will always refer to the PO.

Just my thoughts,
Eric

Once the vessel is licenced (that's licenced, with a number like 50E1234567) the licence must be transfered when the boat changes hands. It's easily done at a Custom House......however you may subsequently receive a letter from the feds asking you to remit the GST. Keep your bill of sale as proof of payment. This applies to any boat that has been licenced.....whether it has a motor or not.
