Like Mac, I too am contemplating installing Lazy Jacks and ironically enough I was going to post the same question on this forum.

What I like about lazy jacks is that they keep the excess sail from cluttering up the cockpit. My reasoning for wanting to install them is 1) I've overcome my fear of drilling holes in my spars 2) if I should be beating in a Force 5-6, a downwind run is downright scary. Most of the more extreme Wayfarer sailors will go downwind under jib alone quite comfortably. On one occasion I was broad reaching in a force 5 under reefed main. Despite my precautions I still managed to lose control and nearly ended up on the rocks. On that occasion I would have preferred to lower the main and unfurl the jib but I knew that if I were to do that the wind would catch "all that cloth" and give me a real problem.

Don makes an excellent point about the battens being caught in the jack lines during the hoist. My "theory" for that problem is to shorten the battens a bit so they don't catch, even if means that the battens are a bit short in the batten pockets. Another thing to take into consideration, is what length should the jacklines be? If they are too short they will not allow the sail to attain its proper shape.

I will be following this thread quite closely to see what others have to say.

I went to Canadian Tire today and got the necessities for my Lazy Jack system. Rather than using fancy deck cleats I bought a pack of copper pipe hangers in the plumbing department (part # 551150) I will use 1/8" x 1/2" aluminum rivets )part # 58-4765-0) and 50' of 3/16 rope (pre-bagged). The rings are from an old rotted out hammock that was in the basement so those were free to me but if I were to replace them is $3.?? a piece. My total cost on this project so far is $12.81 (including the Grab and Snatch Tax) My next purchase were be four black nylon cleats. They're not as strong as the aluminum but there isn't much pressure on them either. The cost for the cleats were a total of $10.60.

Th grand total to install the Lazy jack system is $23.41 (about the cost of a bottle of rum)

On the Wayfarer site on cruising many of the camp cruisers do not use the battens.
They effect the speed on fractionally and also make it easier to drop sails and store them. This would also apply to tangling in a jack system.
My 2 Cents I have nevers sailed without battens but I am going to try it soon.
