Hi,
For some reason the tension on the halyard rigging was off which ended up having the mast moving violently in 20 Knots wind. What is the best way to tention this cable?

Below is the manual except But I still do not quite get it.

"Then you can adjust the rake of the mast, i.e. the amount it leans aft. To start with, and as a rough guide, the tip of the mast should be about 9" aft of a vertical line. Again use the weight on the main halyard and by adjusting the turnbuckle on the forestay,"

Sincerely,

I adjust mine each spring. I have the boat on the trailer and set the transom deck level by adjusting the Height of the front trailer wheel or stand. I add a weight to the main halyard. Let it swing and at the approx deck level or slightly above it the weight should be 9 inches aft of the mast. Adjusting the forestay to get this measurement.
Hope this helps.
Good sailing

Tension on halyard rigging??
You just use the main halyard as a 'plumb line' to help you adjust mast rake. With a wrench or other weight attached to the shackle, the halyard will be plumb and when adjusted properly, the shackle & weight should fall in the middle of the mast (port & starboard measurement) but about 9" back from the mast at deck level. Voila...your mast is raked back 9" at the top.
The mast is held up by the forestay and two shrouds. You adjust all until above condition reached. If like the CL 14, you may also have a 'safety line' at deck level that wraps around the aft side of the mast to keep it from falling while you fiddle with the forestay. You would probably have to loosen this a bit while adjusting rake.
note: if the 16 is like the 14 and equipped with a furling jib, you are adjusting the jib halyard which fills in for a forestay.
