I just purchased a 1972 CL14. The slot in the mast appears to be spread apart where the boom fits. Can I squeeze the mast into shape a get a season of light use? Any other options short of a new mast?

Thanks

Don't touch it! It sounds like your mast is just fine. The slot in the mast is, by design, wider in one section.

I haven't rigged my CL14 since last summer, so I can't recall if the wider section extends to the bottom of the mast, but it serves two necessary functions:

1) The gooseneck attached to the end of your boom has a wingnut thread into a rectangular metal plate. When you loosen the wingnut, it allows you to slip the rectangular plate into the wider section of the mast slot. I (believe) you then slide the rectangular plate (with the boom attached) down into the narrower section of the mast track/slot. Then you tighten up the wingnut and you're good to go (with the boom captured in the narrower section of track).

2) With a small area of the wider section of the slot still above your boom, the opening in the slot allows you to feed the luff-rope that runs up to the head of the sail into the track. If the track didn't widen a bit above the boom you wouldn't be able to slide in the sail.

Good luck! (I think there's detailed rigging instructions posted on the CL website).

Summermemories is correct. Your mast is fine.
