I purchased a used CL16 this summer (#706)and my family and I are really enjoying it.

I have a question for you vetran CL16 owners.

When I find it necessary to lower the main sail, the boom and the sail end up in the cockpit and it is very awkward to do anything.

I have seen pictures of CL16's with the sail down and the boom in the normal position.

My first question is, Should there be some rigging to connect the end of the boom to the top of the mast?

My second question relates to a comment I heard about rolling the main sail around the boom. Is this possible, and should it be done?

I am new to the CL16 and would appreciate and helpful comments.

Thanks.

Hi John;

First of all welcome to our forum. We have come a long way in the past few months and during that time we have covered this topic. I will direct your attention to a posting made by Tom D. in regards to this topic (dated July 14/15). I think you will find it most informative. I will add though that I have also incorporated a two foot length of bungee cord into my topping lift to absorb shock from wave action.

Once again WELCOME ABOARD!!!

WELCOME TO THE BOARD. We need all the input we can get. The CL16 is a great boat.
I never thought of adding the shock cord.
Just got back from our trip 1 1/2 hours ago. Will post some stories. I had my topping lift up most of the week except when actually sailing. It is a nylon cord so it has some stretch.
I will post stories shortly. The spouse is calling.

Thanks guys for your responses.

I installed a topper line complete with the bungie on Saturday. It worked well. We were out for about 4 hours on Lake Simcoe. This Idea was exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks Tom for the details on how to setup a topper line

Hi John. Glad to hear you were able to work out a topping lift for your boat. I have mine rigged with wire and rope so that on light air days I can tighten the lift and allow more air into the sail. I have a Sandpiper, but I'll bet it can done on your boat.
Where do you have your boat on Lake Simcoe? I'm down in Gilford, on Cooks Bay, perhaps we've passed each other!
Cheers
Eric

Hi Eric,

Do you sail with your topper connected to the boom? I was under the impression that when the sail went up the topper was disconnected and attached to the mast.

I have been sailing on Kelpenfeld Bay in Barrie. I tried sailing on Cooks bay once, sailing from Keswick. This was a big mistake....I got hung up in weeds and spent the better part of 3 hours going from one weed patch to another with little or no control. That was my first and last sail on Cooks bay.

Whats it like on Gilford side? Any boat launches and good sailing.

Thanks for your reply .
