Anybody know where telltails should be installed on the mainsail, how long they should be, what material and how to interpret what they indicate about the sail position?

I have tell tales just above each of my batten pockets. I use 6-8" of bright wool. I use a darning needle to push through the seam on the leach of the sail and then, before pulling the wool all the way through, I put a figure of eight in the tail of the wool thread, then pull it tight. The wool will continue to stream even when it's wet. I also have tell tales on my jib at about 1/3 and 2/3 up, 6 - 8 inches in from the luff.
