This list seems to be a little quiet, but I'd like to give it a try for an opinion or two on a boat I just looked at here in mid-Michigan.The sails appear to be in good condition. The interior hull is dirty but ok. The exterior hull, especially the bottom, is a mess. The boat has obviously been pulled ashore over gravel, etc. Lots of scratches, many look pretty deep. The rudder is a mess. It would probably sail allright, but it needs work. Wood is exposed. The centerboard needs refinishing. The hiking straps have lost their looks. I'm a novice sailor so I don't really know what to look for. The self-bailer is a new thing for me. Does it work? Does it always work? Is it troublesome? How can I test it? Is it a pain to repair a rudder with new fiberglass? Could the rudder be shot? Could the hiking straps break under stress? Must the bottom be refinished? Is that an easy job? The seller wants $800 with a trailer, but he says he'll talk. Given the work needed, how much should we talk? Any help listees can offer will be appreciated. Thanks, Cliff East Lansing

I paid $1,400 US about a month ago in Tampa, Florida for a used CL 14. It was in like-new condition and there was a line waiting to beat me to it. Both rudders (swing and fixed) were highly polished without a scratch on them. Any typical hardware store will have fiberglass mats and resin/hardener to patch damaged areas. Note of caution: wear gloves when working with the resin. The hull was in excellent condition. If your hull integrity is not severely damaged, I'd consider buying a can of Marine Tex to repair the scratches. It works great. All rigging and Coast Guard approved equipment were in excellent shape. As to fair price, if you're buying a used boat from a dealer, the "house never loses". If you're buying from a private party, you'll pay what it's worth to you or whatever the local market will bear. If I was faced with the repairs you've mentioned, I'd jump on the deal, as they don't sound insurmountable, and the enjoyment you'll get on the water will far surpass the pain of your initial outlay. Good Luck, Alex

I have had a CL14 for the past 2 years and love it. I patched the hull in two places with fg matting without any problem. It sails great. My family is not in to it and much to my regrete, I'm going to sell for $2000.00 cdn with trailer. It's unsinkable and great for learning. Good luck!

Hello:Great to see you guys talking it up. Good, used CL14's are a hard item to come buy. We can normally sell the for about 4000 Cdn. Schools love to buy them. I assume the $800 is a U.S price. This seems fair, try to go lower though. The bottom being scratched is typicla of a cottage boat and is repariable all you need is some time and fibreglass. The self bailer will work provided you are moving forward at a speed of about 2 knots. To see if it leaks, close it and fill the interior hull (we call it a deck) with water, look under the boat and see if it leaks. If it doesnt then it is only an asset ot have, if it does leak then you can always remove it, re-install it and then be ok, or failing that you can remove it and patch the area with fibreglass. The rudder might be scratched but they usually last a while if its a fibreglass blade. Try to get the seller to 700 U.S. Just make sure they know the amount of work needed, be sure to mention cure time for the fibreglass and how this affects how fast you get in the water. CAM: Where are you located, we buy used CL's all the time, if you still have your boat, we should talk. cote@cgocable.net or clsail@vaxxine.com. Hope it all works out for your guys, Cody Remember: It sucks working on the boat usually, you have to think of how great it is once you are out there. Happy Sailing.
