Was out on L. Erie on the weekend in a 25k blast. Had to end the fun as I was unable to hold on to the smooth and wet golf tiller extension. Is the t-bar end tiller extension a better bet?

i like the rwo tillers they seem to do well i have the R0571 if you have not done it yet make sure your rudder is straight up and down not swept back
http://www.rwo-marine.com/

look under the rudders and tillers
then go to the fixed tiller extensions

I see the problem as excessive weather helm, not that the tiller extension is insufficiently grippy. That is, the problem is too much weather helm, the symptom is a tiller that's hard to hold on to.

Fix the problem, not the symptom.

If you're using a stock rudder with it's 20 to 30 degree sweep you will find that the weather helm is enormous in a breeze. Replace or remount your rudder so that it's vertical - then you won't get the weather helm.

Yes, this is more involved than just replacing the extension, but your boat is trying to tell you something - the helm should be balanced and require little force to turn or hold - if it isn't then something is out of whack. Fix what's out of whack rather than just pulling harder.

I re-mounted my rudder so it is now vertical in the water and ooooohhhh what a difference !! On the weekend I went out into 20-25 kt wind under reefed main and the new rudder configuration made a world of difference. Right now I'm thinking of drilling a hole through the housing so I can insert a pin through the rudder so it doesn't kick back when under pressure. I plan to use a simple method so I can reach back to pull the pin out when preparing for beaching.

I noticed that my homemade mast-step block has come apart during the last outing and was pleased to find that the mast stayed up without the support that the block provides. In fact I ran into a CL 16 owner last year who doesn't even have a block installed and the mast is rigid. However I do not want to tempt fate so I'll be ordering a block from CL sailboats and hopefuly it will tighten up my shrouds.
