... As of today, the Hobie 16 is polished, trailer painted and wheel bearings will be re-placed this weekend. My labour fee is quite reasonable, I work for beer. ------------------

I'll be working under the hull of a sailboat this weekend for the same currency of the land (beer or other refreshing beverages). Wax on wax off: It's very therapeutic. We will becoming at one with the boat.

I will finish up my yearly task for the Mirage 33.
I have the 6 floor panels at home.
(marine plywood with a thin teak veneer)
I need to lightly sand and coat with Cetol gloss.
Our skipper likes bright & shiny.

Don;
Go for the beer like Darcy and I. I managed to get wings out of the deal too. The sailors here sometimes refer to me as the "Wingnut"

Trouble is....
If I get a half dozen beer in me, I'm useless for work.
Just got home from the RNSYS.
Went down with our skipper to tear off the shrinkwrap.
I have one coat of Cetol on the floor panels. One more and I'm good to go.
Now to get my CL 14 out of the garage and
size it up for a Yamaha 2.5 hp 4 stroke.
Things are looking up.

Saturday was superb!! Beautiful sunny day. Tons of keeners working on their boats. Even a few sailing.
I cleaned up the winter dirt (Still can't figure out how leaves get in cockpit with tarp on?) Waxed topsides and below waterline, put up mast, rigged boat and helped install roller furling.
The boat shines and I'm pumped!!! D'Arcy

I helped my friend to the wheel bearing on his boat trailer. I've never done this before and he's confined to a wheelchair hence I do my best to follow his directions. What a gong show this is turning out to be. The right wheel had only half a bearing in it but the left one seems to be OK but we concluded that since one is already toast, the left wheel will soon follow. (So i get to do this twice) After a lot of grunting from me and encouragement from him, we (I) finally got the lug nuts loose. The wheel drums came off without too much problem. The bearings fell out (2 1/2) in both drums. Replacing the left ones are relatively easy but as the saying goes "there's on in every crowd" That would be the right one.
I cleaned and greased the axle but the drum will not go in all the way so I can't get the screwy thingy to grip the threads properly. So i have to clean and file the axle some more between snow storms. OH YES WAY OUT HERE IN ALBERTA WE HAD SNOW ON THE WEEKEND!!!!!!
Fortunately he's not in too much of a hurry. As long as I get the job done before i head to NS....we'll be OK

I'm due for a wheel bearing inspection/repack myself.
Is that the 'crown' or 'king' nut you had trouble screwing onto the axle?
I'm concerned about getting the hub apart and having trouble getting the bearings seated properly. I haven't tackled this job before.

I repack my trailer wheel bearings every spring. Usually they don't need anything but I add a little grease each time.
If they show any signs of water or wear.
I take the entire wheel and bearing off clean the best I can and repack.
Doing this every spring bearings will last a very long time. My only problem is getting the dust cap off the axle without damaging it.
Good sailing tom d

Tom
Do you pry the dust caps off with a screwdriver/tap on the outside edges with a hammer/ or grab with something like waterpump pliers and rock/twist out??
