I'm still considering the
aforementioned purchase of a cl 14
here in mid-Michigan. Reading
through the messages on the forum
and purusing the cl website, it
comes to light that the
centerboard is supposed to be
fiberglass. Instead, it is wood.
Also, the owner has said, "If
you're one of those people who
must have a completely dry
boat..." Then he mentioned how
the fiberglass will soak up water
and leak if the bottom is
scratched. This bottom is
scratched. But with a double
hull, how is a leak to the
interior possible? I actually am
a person who wants to sail dry,
unless the water comes over the
gunwales. How serious is the
problem of once-wet fiberglass
(the boat hasn't been sailed in
over a year), and...is a wooden
centerboard a problem? Thanks.

In the 1980's both centerboard and rudder were made of plywood.
Replacements are of fibreglass.

Hello Cliff:

As whited mentioned the rudderblade and the centreboard were made of wood untill about 1989 when moulds were cast and then production switched to fibreglass. There is no problem with wood except that it will soak up water if the paint has peeled and eventually break. A new centreboard is about $280.00 cdn so maybe factor that in.

A scratched hull will not take on water for sure. The "scratches" will have to be gaudges for this to happen. The glass with resin on it will repel water it is only when the guadges removes the resin and leave bare glass that was not wetted out (this in its self is rare). Most of the time the scratches will not leak. The leak probably lies else where on the boat, probably the centerboard pivot bolt. Check and make sure the rubber washers are compressed.

Check these out and tell us how you do.

Can you provide us with more info on the boat so we can mayeb better guide you?
