Here's one sailors sad story about the trouble he had removing 5200 from his window frames. I love his comment....{The "PO" bedded the old windows with 5200. That stuff is Evil. Evil. 5200. Evil. 5200. Evil. Evil. 5200. Evil. 5200. Evil. Evil. 3M 5200 should really be a "special order" product. It has no use in normal boat maintenance.}I use 5200 in through-hull installations below the waterline...depth sounders, speedos, drains etc. For deck fittings we use 4800 and only use silicon when sealing plexiglass to metal or fibreglass. http://www.wbryant.com/StellaBoat/Projects/windows/index.htm IP: 141.117.228.250 |

Offshore magazine had an article on just this subject (caulks/adhesives) this month. Definitely have to use silicon on ports! I did my cockpit drains in M5200. Wonder if I'll regret it...If I get a chance I'll scan/post the article. ------------------ Kevin Shortstay III, #901 IP: 198.115.167.23 |

From what I've heard in the past, and what this thread is about now, I don't think I'd EVER use 5200! I don't think any fitting is that permanent on a sailboat. Someday the fitting may need to be removed, for repair or replacement. If th seal ends up leaking, well I'd call it bad luck. Just my thoughts Any rebedding of fittings on my boat, have been sealed with Sikaflex. For ports, I've read that butyl tape, or similar would work. Kevin, I would try avoid silicone, although it does work for the short term. It can also be hard to remove the silicone residue. Eric, I'm suggesting silicon for resealing ports only. I've read it's the only proper sealant for plexiglass ports.IP: 198.115.167.5 |
