Well, My piper is working well but I think I may sell her at the end of this season. I am going to maket her down her in the Maritimes, but I think it may fetch more up in the Lakes area. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should post it if and when I put it up for sale? What have the going prices been up there lately?

Thanks...

I sold mine last year.
I made up a web site on Tripod http://www.tripod.lycos.com/
and loaded it up with detailed photos and long detailed desciption of what the boat had.
You must be sure to open the site up to the internet. Call the site something like "Sandpiper 565 for sale" so when some one does a search on "Sandpiper" and or "S565" it will come up.
It took in the order of about 2 weeks to sell it that way. Other than mentioning it and providing a link to my site here, I did no other advertising.
A popular way to sell in Ontario is in Boat for Sale http://www.boatforsale.net/
I found my present boat by looking there actually.
I see one Sandpiper currently advertised there for $4,700.

I'd take a nice picture of the boat and then produce a bunch of 'For Sale' posters.
I'd post them at MMOS, (not sure about Binnacle), all the boat & yacht clubs locally.
Last week a 'Piper was advertised for $4k. Not sure if that was the same one listed for sale a couple of weeks ago or not.
What size are you moving up to? I figured if you were a keen racer, the Sandpiper's days were numered.

I'm actually not buying a new boat with racing in mind. I have enough boats I can race on and that will keep me from trying to race mine and spending all that $$$ on nice sails. I'd like to find a 27-30 footer more some nice cruising in and outside the harbour.

I always wanted to do the Halifax/Bras d'Or lakes/return cruise. When I finally realized I'd be seasick as soon as I got outside the protected areas..that ended the dream.
Better for me to haul the boat as long as a good ramp is available.

www.sailquest.com has a free ad service.
As far as price is concerned, it's a regional issue. The ones in Quebec seem to be valued higher than Ontario. I guess it comes down to the boat, and it's condition.

Good luck.

In the lower United States the Sandpiper is not worth much. If I were to sell mine, and that is not in the cards, I would sell it in Canada.

I found mine in the Trailer Sailor for $1900 on a trailer with a Honda 2.2 4 stroke motor. It was in San Deigo. The guy I bought it from said he had lots of Calls from Canada, but no one could make the trip to come get it. So i got a heck of a deal.

Hi Rob

I may be in the market for your boat. I was looking for one of the smaller CLs but in my case, your location is great as I want the boat in Cape Breton. Do you have any idea how hard it would be to transport there? Also, any chance you would sell mid august?

I'm new to this posting/chat thing so apologies if I've somehow entered this message incorrectly or not followed etiquette.

I am in Halifax, and I have a trailer that I would sell with the boat. Mid august was a little soon, but if not, later in the fall for sure... PM me at

Hello Whited

Yes, very near St. Peters, Middle Cape in fact. Do you know of something for sale nearby? I'd pretty much given up on finding something on the BrasD'or Lakes.

A couple of weeks ago someone had a Sandpiper 565 advertised in the Halifax Herald.
Don't see it now.
I hope to take my 'Piper down to St. Peters community celebration 1st week in August.
I'll have it at the marina. I'll make sure I mention it here just before I leave...in case you want to see a 'Piper up close.

Here's some pics of my Piper

It will be for sale at the end of the season. Anytime you are in Halifax, you can come take a look at it in the water.

Thank you both Whited and Cool Breeze but I live in Ottawa (please don't hold that against me- i'm not involved with politics and I grew up in NS). I will not be in Cape Breton until August 15 and then for only two weeks this year (hopefully longer in future years).

Ideally I wanted to have something to sail for this year. I can find many suitable boats here however I am having a hard time locating small boats in the east. I expect the cost to ship even a small boat east would be prohibitive.

So back to your original question Cool Breeze, if when you refer to up in the lakes you mean the Great Lakes, I'm not convinced that trying to sell the boat here in Ontario is the best option. The market is certainly bigger but getting it here will add cost and at least on first impressions it is hard for a salt water boat to compete with fresh water boats. I am constantly amazed by the very old boats here that look great. I do agree however that posting at the best Internet sites will make a difference - I carefully searched all the main sites prior to making my first and only E-bay purchase -a Mirage 29 in absolutely beautiful condition. Regarding pricing, my general impression at the time was that there were very good deals in the US, even with an unfavourable $ conversion(better now), private sales in Ont and Que could offer a good deal if you shopped around but the east coast prices were at least as high as the Ontario broker prices. I think most of the NS prices I saw were broker prices however and not private sales. Perhaps you will have good luck getting your price if you sell locally.

In Ontario the sailing/yacht club sites are a good resource to find out what boats are selling for privately. The clubs here seem to always have on line classified adds - something I don't see for the Eastern clubs. For example, check out the Nepean Sailing Club. There was a great Quebec site I had located but can't find it any longer.

I would be very grateful if either of you would let me know if you hear of anything that would be available for sale for slightly before or on August 16.

I would also invite any comment regarding how the sandpiper handles. It is a bit more boat than we had first considered - my preference was the CL 16 and probably even the 14 would suit our purposes. I couldn't resist adding the Sandpiper to the list as it sounds like a solid choice and certainly is a nice looking boat. How does it do in light air? I'd like to avoid a motor if possible but would like to get home when the wind dies.

Again, thank you very much for your responses.

Colleen.. I see the Sandpiper is back in today's classifieds.
see http://www.herald.ns.ca/classifieds/recreational/

phone exchange seems to indicate River John area.
I've mentioned in here before that I went up to Cap de la Madelein, Quebec and towed my new piper back a year ago. Only bad time was the chewed-up two lane highways in Northern New Brunswick and just over the Quebec border.
BTW checkout the 21' Sirus listed. If you have a tow vehicle that can handle the extra 1000 lbs, that could be a sweet ride.

Thank you very much Whited. I should have thought to check the Herald. I tried CB Post a few months ago and had no luck accessing classifieds on-line.

I'll check this out. I've also contacted CL Sailboats, they were very helpful and it seems they have various used/demo CL Code-40 models and that shipping to NS might be feasible.

Did you mention that you had a CL 16 prior to the Sandpiper? Were you happy with this boat? I'm not sure the Piper cabin is a huge draw for me and I certainly like the ease associated with getting a smaller boat in and out of the water. Any thoughts?

I had a CL14 that sat for four years in my driveway. At that time I was regular crew on first a Viking 28 and then a Mirage 33 out of the Royal NS Yacht Squadron. That 14 was a bit small and I couldn't get my wife interested to try a sail. We went with the piper because she wants to be well above the water and a 'head' is a great bonus. Last year she had a cancer scare, but after an operation recovered perfectly. This year she has been called back to work 3 times from the company she retired from and it looks like she'll work until mid September.
D'oh! A CL 16 may have been a better choice for me. I think the big difference would be launching & retrieving singlehanded.
BTW..if you get a 'piper...count on having a reliable outboard in the 6 to 8 hp range.

Hey Rob...
Have you seen the new launching ramp in Bedford? It's at the new waterfront development there. You turn off the Bedford highway at the new Fire/Police Station.
(Con?? something street) turn right after you pass the bridge over the railroad tracks and drive as far as you can go..the last way on a gravel road. The new launch ramp is alongside the South breakwater. Ramp looks great plus there is a floating raft attached to the breakwater/wharf to tie up to. Looks like a dozen trailers can be parked there.

Not sailing yet...but my house project is just about finished. I also promised my nephew i'll be around on occasion to help him build a new house in fall River. (worked 0800-1800 on Sunday) I'll concentrate now on my 'Piper...a cousin gave me use of her house trailer in St. Peters weekend of Aug 05/06/07 and I'll tow the boat down and launch on the Bras d'Or lakes.
I might even call my cousin over the VHF and have him open up the canal locks so I can sail
down past St. Peter's Island out on the Bay.
I hope someone local buys your boat...it would be fun to pace myself alongside it on the harbour.
