In an exchange of cruising stories, an observation was shared about the 1000 Islands. The weather conditions and the water levels may have caused exceptional weed growth. For these conditions, it had been recommended that a Bruce Anchor (a heavy Bruce anchor) be used. A Danforth anchor would not get traction in a weed bed.

Perhaps someone here could post pictures of a Danforth anchor and a Bruce anchor so that we may see the differences. Could someone make recommendations on which anchor to use if the river bed is weedy? What wisdom could the group share about anchoring in general and anchoring in weeds?

One thing we learned about anchoring in weeds was patience. After many instances of ploughing furrows along the bopttom when backing down on the anchor to set it......we learned to lay the anchor, 20' of chain and nylon rode to a scope of 5 to 7 times water depth. Then, instead of immediately powering backward to set the anchor...we'd wait 1/2 hour or so...have a coffee..tidy up the sails on the boom etc. Then we'd power back on the anchor. Most often..the anchor had peenetrated the weed bed and would hold the bottom nicely. We used a Delta spade type anchor, which has a heavily ballasted sharp tip. Danforths work best in clear sandy bottoms. In Georgian Bay's North Channel an old fashioned 25# yachtsman or fishermans anchor held best on a bottom strewn with large boulders. Patience, and carrying a variety of anchors is the "Bottom Line" here.

The Simpson Horizon seems like a steal. Any idea if they are any good?

I think that ShortWave has a 14# Delta...can you confirm D'Arcy? It works very well if patiently deployed in heavy weeds.

The Delta is beautiful. We've never had a problem. I think it would plow through weeds better than a Bruce. I'll check to see what number it is (hopefully on weekend).

When anchoring off Grimsby using a Bruce we actually grasped a huge egg shaped rock (about18" across) in the flukes. it was very difficult to get out as we couldn't get the anchor on deck.

D'Arcy, Shortwave
