Here is a picture of me and my father doing capsize drills. In this picture I am trying to turtle the boats but it will not. http://img40.exs.cx/img40/8482/100_2481.jpg We attached two pool noodles at the top of the mast, and as far as I can tell the boat can not longer turtle. I tried going at the end of the mast and sinking it. but it just floats back to the surface. I removed the noodles afterwards while the boats was on its side and immediatly the boat started to turtle. I quickly put the noodles back on. While sailing the noodles does not move around, make noise and it does not appear like it interfears with the air flow of the sails. Here is a picture of the noodles http://img36.exs.cx/img36/333/100_2476.jpg I can take a picture of my settup up close if anyone is interested Remi

I would indeed be interested in a close-up of your setup. While I have yet to flip my boat I am sure at some point it may happen. If a couple of swim noodles seems like cheap insurance to me. ------------------ Bob Crowley Luna #486 IP: 66.251.25.110 |

Here are pictures of my setup it is very simple. I plan to improve the way the noodles are tied to the mast once I replace the mast with a new one. The two noodles are tied together by black(sun resistant) tie wraps. A medium sized one around the noodles and a smaller one in between the noodles around the other tie wrap to keep the noodles together and preserve the groove in the middles of the noodles so it fits better on the mast. On the mast the noodles are tied on one end to my wind pennant holder and the other end by the spinnaker pulley. Also it is probably a good idea to protect the noodles from the UV rays, so what I will do in the future is put some material, maybe white, to protect them. http://img68.exs.cx/img68/5176/100_2499.jpg http://img61.exs.cx/img61/1886/100_2506.jpg http://img40.exs.cx/img40/204/100_2507.jpg http://img32.exs.cx/img32/7425/noodle.jpg I hope this helps Remi [This message has been edited by RBedard (edited August 10, 2004).] [This message has been edited by RBedard (edited August 10, 2004).] IP: 142.217.176.129 |

How long have you had the noodles there and how long do you expect them to last? the noodles on our sailing school hunters lasted about a year up on the shrouds before falling off.I'm going to suggest this method of anti-turtling to the yacht club, as we sail in waters too shallow to let the boat completely turtle, so the mast gets stuck in mud/weeds, and it can sometime take quite a while to get the boat righted. PS: You have very colourful sails. ------------------ Canadian Sailor "Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. Hello. I have not tried putting up only one noodle, it would be interesting to know if one noodle would provide enough buoyancy at the top of the mast. I may try it with one in the future. All I know right now is that two noodle provide a lot of buoyancy to prevent the boat from turtling. I have had the noodles on for about two months now. I can't really see UV damage on them right now and there is minimal digging of the ropes in the noodles. I plan to replace the noodles next year Not a big investment, they are really cheap. What I will do in the future is wrap and sew material over the noodles to protect them from the U.V rays. Thank you all for the suggestions and commentaries. Remi IP: 142.217.176.129 |
