Does anyone have any advice on solo sailing with a CL 11? Specifically, I'm looking for advice on sailing with the main only. Does anyone know any websites geared specifically to solo sailers? Thanks a lot.

What do you need to know? The only thing I can forsee(when sailing under main only), is that the helm balance may be off a bit, but no biggie! Many of us sail alone at some point in time, if not regularly. Your approach is sound, ie just starting out with main only. Once your comfort level increases, you'll want the jib up! Make sure you practice both tacking and gybing with main alone. With gybing, you'll want to sheet in the main to centre as you execute the gybe, then release the main once the wind has passed through the cntre of the boat. A good book is Sailing for Dummies. I read it and still refer to it from time to time. It's very easy to understand! Good luck, and keep asking questions!Eric IP: 130.63.100.131 |

Sailing for Dummies? I think I should get that. It would be the perfect companion piece to the first book I got: The Complete Idiots Guide to Boating & Sailing! IP: 198.115.167.14 |

I sail a CL16 solo most of the time. I use the main only when the wind speed goes over 15 mph. You will not point as high and will not have the speed as if you use the jib. Eric has good advice. I've tried to launch a spinnaker on the cl16 solo on Lake Michigan. It was unsuccesful but that is another story. Good Sailing Tom D. CL16 #438IP: 64.12.117.21 |

Tom, I'm pretty sure you can delete a post. Click on the edit icon (third one in) of your post & you'll be popped into a screen that includes an option to delete. I've never tried it, but I have certainly used the edit function after realizing I posted something wrong or called someone the wrong name, Ted... Tim... Tom!!! Kevin

Hi Eric! Thanks for your pointers. Yes, I have that book and a few other good ones. I've been sailing for almost 3 years, but I'm just venturing out on my own now and wanted to get some idea of what I'm in for . I've solo'd in the CL with both main and jib but I just wanted to know what to be aware of without the jib. Thanks again. MaiaIP: 207.181.66.247 |

Bob...re estimated wind speed. This is covered in the Cdn. Power Squadron courses. Without digging out my book, I believe white caps start to appear at about 15 knots.IP: 142.177.152.116 |

Hi Mojo!I often solo my CL11 on a gusty little lake in Muskoka. I would suggest getting used to the main as others have suggested and practice doing shapes like like circles and figure-8s. Where do you sail, BTW? cheers, Martin CL 11 #412

Tere, tere!Ei ole. I'm at OHCC, about a half a block from the Water Rats. I should pop over and see if I can find him...there are a few of us with CL11's in that area. I was out both days on the weekend in pretty good winds...had a great time. Koik head, Maia IP: 207.181.66.247 |
