Bought a CL14 hull from my yacht club sailing school to refinish. It has no mast, sails or rigging. I have found sets of sails and mast available but they are from a 19' boat. I know I can adapt them to fit but wonder what an oversize mast and sail package will do to this vessel in the handling department. Wife gets really upset if we blow over or turtle. Suggestions or warnings?

54:

Cool project! A 19' rig on a 14' boat and your wife doesn't want to get wet. There is a danger that the boat may not stay upright tied to the dock even with no wind blowing. And there is a danger that your wife may never sail with you again.

What kind of rig is it? Flying Scot? You'll have a lot of horsepower, like a Pontiac with N2O.

Nothing is going to fit first try. You'll have to shorten the stays, the boom will overhang the transom, the sheets will be in the wrong location.

It's going to be a project.

Can you supply more details?

Mast and sail set on e-bay. May be more work than worth it to adapt. Thanks for the tips. I guess I could spend $250 and then waste alot of time and money making this fit or just keep looking. David

that extrusion looks too big for a CL14.

Suggest you just put some ads up around different yacht clubs and their web sites looking for a CL14 / CLl6 mast.

Check with Quiet Waters as well.

Dad thought we could shorten it all up and trim down the sails. We also have a Kell 23 with spare sails but they just dwarf this little CL. Wanna single hand sail and race this. Does anyone know if this would disqualify the vessel from running in her class if I over power her with more sail? Thanks for the interest. David

Hi,

It appears the mast extrusion will be too wide to fit between the fibreglass as the mast meets the deck.

To qualify as a one design the mast bands and sail dimensions would need to meet the class requirements. I'm not actually aware of existence any more of a CL14 class association or rules (as per CL16 or Wayfarer). I would suggest that if you are planing to race with a group of other CL14's that it would be a violation of the "spirit" of one-design even if your sailplan did not give an advantage.

Suggest you contact quiet waters near Orillia - they specialize in small boats and always have lots of parts around (used masts maybe)

Do have fun with your new boat - and gets lots of sailing time in.

Steve

Compare the sail plans of the Glen-L 19 with the CL-14.

The Glen-L is a masthead rig with a backstay. The mast location appears to be well back from the bow. You can't get a more different sailplan.

54, there will be significant challenges that will cost time and money to make this rig fit your CL-14. And, you won't be able to race 1-design.
