I'm new to sailing. A freebee CL 14 requires repairs (2 straight chainsaw gashes (1/2" wide and about 6" long) on each side of the hull. Otherwise, hull is in good shape. I have the rudder and centerboard, but nothing else. Is it worth fixing? Can I get used parts (Mast, boom, sails, fittings, etc) and where/how? (I live in the Toronto area). Also, to access large lake, I will have to pass under bridge, so is it possible to have mast/boom on a pivot?StanG

What the h*ll! Was the po using the boat as a 'saw horse' or was he junking it? You'd be lucky to find all the used sails/rigging you need and have you tried pricing out new parts on this website? The older Cl 14's mast did not pivot and the CL people told me they don't have anything to retrofit. (My 14 was a 1985 model) good luck.

Ah..Ha. I was waiting for someone to ask. I'm once or twice removed from po, but got the boat from neighbour who said that gashes were caused accidentally when po was clearing fallen trees after tornado hit our cottage area (Haliburton, Ont) about 10 yrs ago. Can still see damage here/there in area, locals tell stories about fridges, etc found in bush, and sign on road refers to "mother of all storms". RE this CL14, it seems sacrilegious to turn an antique boat(it has Waterhouse & May - Pickering nameplate)into a flowerpot. Call me a sentimental eccentric wannabe sailor, but I thought I might putter around to try to fix and hopefully sail it. Thanks in advance for any help & advice.

Depends on how lucky your are, how handy you are and how much you want to spend? I inherited a CL16 with crushed lower chines from a marine railway system. The first marina I went to wanted a thousand bucks with no guarantee on the price or work. I drove to another marina less than a mile away and they did the work for $400. The damage was 18 inches long and 2 inches wide on each side of the chine on both sides. I spent another hundred on miscellaneous bits and pieces and we have had several great weekends of sailing for $500 with many yet to come (I hope). A friend of mine inherited a skunk hull, centerboard, rudder and some standing rigging. He got a real deal on a rig from a mirror dinghy that had disintegrated in the weather. He and I spent an afternoon adapting the rig and he is ready to go for less than a nice dinner for 2. The nice thing about salvaging a boat is that you a story to go with it. Best of luck.

Go for it, Stan. I'll bet you can find someone to do the work on the hull reasonably enough if you shop around. Surely some folks here can give Stan some leads on this! Go to this link to get to the new parts download http://www.vaxxine.com/clsailboats/orderinfo.htm Also, continue to come to this forum to post questions as well as to look at older threads for great tidbits of advice. I too am new sailing -- well, coming back after many years away -- and there's quite a number of helpful people who have a passion for these boats (we have the no longer produced Sandpiper). You can also contact the CL folks too. Very helpful people. BTW-Does it say what your hull number is on the name plate? ------------------ Kevin Shortstay III, #901 IP: 198.115.167.29 |

I got my hull repairs done at Bobcaygeon Marine. Nice folks and fair prices. If you know the area you'll know who wanted the grand.[This message has been edited by Dougster (edited August 12, 2004).] [This message has been edited by Dougster (edited August 12, 2004).] IP: 65.48.236.64 |
