I am a new owner/sailor of a CL16 (hull 175) and live in New Westminster (bedroom community to Vancouver) BC. I have done a fair bit of grunt and cosmetic work to it, and have had it out on the saltchuk about 8 times so far. I LOVE IT.....

I would enjoy more postings from "the little guys" (ie. non-Sandpiper sailors). Especially, any tales of gunkholing/camping trips.

I would like to know if there are any CL 16'rs out this way. It would be great to do some island-hopping out-tripping with others in the class.

Anyway, I love the Forum and check it out almost daily for new items.

Once I get a digital camera, I might post a few pictures from the "Wet Coast".

Cheers,
Doug

Hello Fellow CL16 sailor.
They are some west coast CL16s. I know of one in Alaska and also California.
I know these boats as as far as the easterners from you. There may be someone in Seattle area.
For a while the board was mostly CL16 but since Robert with Celtic Kiss got a lady friend we don't hear from him anymore.
Also the Wayfarer sailors do a lot of camp cruising. The CL16 is very similar to the Wayfarer. Most of them are easterners.
My boat is put away for the season.

Don't feel bad. I have been coming to this forum for almost 4 years and the this is tendency. Not a complaint, anyone should feel free to share their enjoyment of their boat. In my case I have the rarest of the rate - a Code 40, and I know what it is like to have no one to talk to. Really the thing to keep in focus is we are all sailors and we love getting out on the water regardless of what is under us.

Cheers!

Welcome aboard.

I frequently lurk with only the occassional post. Own a CL14 myself, but find the CL16 posts just as interesting.

Picked up a book recently by a guy who sailed a fiberglass Wayfarer from FL to around DC (camp-cruising along the way). I've been surprised to see no mention of the book here since a fiberglass Wayfarer seems virtually identical to the CL16. Anyone else read his book? "The biggest boat I could afford" or something close to that...

A guy from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia did a similar, although much shorter sail.
He left Halifax Harbour in his Wayfarer and sailed north-east to Cape Breton. He did write an article describing the trip in detail.

Frank & Margaret Dye have done a lot cruising in their Wayfarer. He has an ocean crossing and they have written several books about camp cruising.
Yep the CL16 is a close copy of the Wayfarer.
good sailing Tom D

Maybe the Sandpipers will have some means that us true day sailors can join in ther regatta in Aug. Without proper potty facilities which we cannot put in our boats we would be left out. Maybe they could camp near a park with facilities.

The Dye books are amazing. They got many sailors thinking outside the box. We had friends on the West Coast who camp cruised. They went places that keel boats couldn't go; wonderful shallow bays or narrow channels.

There is something very relaxing or calming about cruising to natures' timetable. I have some beautiful memories of sitting in a bay waiting for the tide to change in order to sail through a pass.

Could the overnight sail be a daysail to a campsite, returning the next day? If you read the potty postings it sounds like half the Sandpipers will be able to carry their porta-heads onto the beach. No sailor should miss out on the CL movement in August.

Great article Cramage!! Just the sort of thing I'm interested in doing next Summer here on the Wet Coast. There are a guzillion miles of shoreline to explore....

Thanks for the tip on the book Summermemories. Have you remembered the accurate title and/or author yet?

Whited, have you got the specifics on that article about the Cape Breton trip?

I found a pretty comprehensive web-site, that seems to be focussed on Wayfarer stuff. Pretty serious list of books and articles, and a lending mail order library. Has anyone used it yet?? http://www.angelfire.com/de2/WIT/PhillipsA.htm

Their are several good articles posted right on the website, and a number of good links.

Anyway, I wanted to post something so that I didn't seem a flash in the pan on the forum.

Let's keep this up!!!

Trying to remember where I read his log.
I'm sure I was cruising the internet during my CL 14 days and found it somewhere. I wonder if the Wayfarer site archives it's older stories?

Whited, looks like you nailed the article you were trying to remember! Great article!! Just the type of thing I plan to do (hopefully before retirement!). I thought the appendix about using muscle power vs motor power was very useful (I have printed it for my binder).

Summermemories, any luck remembering the spec.s on the DC to FL article yet?

I love getting the links, and have a folder set up on my "favourites" that it already starting to bulge with good stuff!

"any luck remembering the spec.s on the DC to FL article yet?"

I recently saw the book, although I didn't buy it. It IS titled "The Biggest Boat - I could afford" (The hyphen may or may not exist in the title)
I picked it up and read about 15 minutes, but didn't buy it. It was written by an Australian bloke that decided to cruise the eastern US. I didn't read enough to know why he didn't just cruise Australia (I didn't start at the beginning of the book).
He apparently didn't know how to sail before he started out, and learned everything along the way. I thought that was kind of poor planning, and lost a bit of interest reading about a guy learning how to hoist a sail for the first time. Other than that, it was interesting. I think kind of half sailing, half travel log. Probably a good winter read. But, like I said, I didn't buy it.

Also, as a Sandpiper owner, I would enjoy reading a lively forum of CL16's and CL14's.

Hi Doug,
I too am a new CL 16 owner. I acquired "Aquairius" # 299 a few months back. I tend to read more than post because I have a lot more questions than knowledge about sailing. At least for a while. I've only had her out a couple of times, but I sure like her so far. One day was in VERY heavy winds, and she handled beautifully. I'm over in the U.S. mid-west, Michigan.

Thanks for the great link Whited. Apart from the info about the book, I found a wealth of information on the site. I have printed out a great deal of useful information for my binder: equipment suggestions, techniques, etc. etc. You should check it out MHarshey! Great stuff for us novices!!

I also found "The Biggest Boat I Could Afford" listed at Chapters (however, not at my particular outlet...). I'm having second thoughts after reading the review provided on our thread; I might suggest that it would be a good acquisition to our local librarian instead...

Having a lot of fun surfing the links that are materializing in this forum. Thanks alot everyone!!

Doug

What camera was used for the video? Was it a still digital camera with the movie mode, or a real camcorder?

It was originally captured with a Sony DCR-TRV18 Mini DV Camcorder. The quality of video that I get with this camera is excellent however, the size of the resulting movie files is much larger than is practical to post to the web through free sites like angel fire. The low res is a result of shrinking the size of the movie using Windows Movie Maker (Part of Windows XP).

Hi CL16Man and all the other great sailors on this thread!

CL16Man, I wasn't able to get the video portion of the page to load today, and I am dying to see it! Can you provide some guidance on viewing it, please?

Thanks,
Christy

The file is pretty big so it may not work over a dial up connection. You need to be accessing it from a windows based machine that has windows media player installed. When you first go to the page you should see the media player controls in the bottom cell. You should just have to click on the play button (it may take a few seconds for the movie to start). You probably want to have the popcorn ready at the start as the movie is only about 10 minutes long
