I purchased an older boat (868) last year and it came with a spinaker (beautiful with a maple leaf on it) and a spinaker pole however, I can't figure out the rigging. I went throught the old manual and it seems that the pole should clip onto the mast (where the main halyard clip secures to the mast when not in use??). And a shock cord is supposed to run from the mast to mid way on the pole to mast again (No idea where to clip it, nothing obvious on the mast). Any help would be gratefully received.

My boat is a CL16. The topping lift/downhaul for the spinnaker boom is attached to the mast approximately 4 - 5 inches below the spreaders. I have a small grometted hole in the deck near the mast that the downhaul goes through and is attached to the centerboard trunk and adjustable. If this is not available another mast clip should be placed close to the foredeck on the mast. The topping lift section should be mostly bungee cord material. This should be attached to the spinnaker boom so that it is in a lifted position. The downhaul is nonelastic. Adjusting the boom to be level using the downhaul. figure 9 in the old manual shows a good sketch of the spinnaker setup. Good sailing Tom D.

Many Thanks. I think I am almost there. Can you tell me where on the mast (how many inches above the deck)the spinaker boom should be attached?

The eye loop for the spinnaker boom is mounted approximately 50 inches from the bottom. On my boat that is 34 inches above the deck at the mast. I will try to help when ever I can. Good Sailing Tom D.

I just realized (forgive me I'm a bit slow) that the picture I encounter most frequently of a cl 16 is flying a spinaker. From what I can make out the topping lift seems to descend from about where the spreaders are and the pole could be clipped to the rings where the main and jib halyards clip to when they are not in use. Any chance the topping lift is simply connected to the spreaders?

On my 16 the spinnaker topping lift us snapped onto a small loop connected to the mast a few inches below the spreaders. My boat is old and was built with all the racing options. The spinnaker downhaul passes through the deck in front of the mast and passes through another hole in teh bulkhead near the foot of the mast and passes back onto the centerboard trunk where is is connected by a camcleat for adjustments.
