Just sold my Hobie 17. Wife never liked it much because of her back troubles. Wondering if a CL16 would be a boat we could both enjoy? How much more comfortable are they compared to a Hobie? How does performance compare of CL16 to Hobie?

Apreciate any help I can get here.

A monohull will not accellerate nearly as quickly as the catamaran. Reaching and downwind there is no comparison. Beating the speed of the monohull may not be as good but the pointing is much greater and most good monos will beat a cat upwind.
I was on a large inland lake with my CL16 with a 16 Hobie downwind I was lost. He was cruising around as I neared him. As we headed back up the lake into the wind. I was able to point mcuh higher and we cruised upwind for a few miles and I got way ahead.
The CL16 is very stable and you can stay DRY while sailing.

Bob,

I have a CL16 which I use for cruising and camping and a Seaspray 15 catamaran for club racing. I don't know about the Hobie 17 but I always get to the windward mark before the Hobie 16s. Offwind, they kill me. I guess the Seaspray points high for a cat.

The CL16 is BOG SLOW compared to the cat. Yes, it is dryer but a lot more physical to sail. More hiking, more sheeting, more moving crew around for trim. If I had a bad back, I think I'd prefer the cat because of the stability. Just my .02.

I used to race cats in my youth. Lots of fun with thrilling performance.

As we got older the thought of firehose type spray seemed a little less appealling. A dryer boat with seats allows us to comfortably cruise.

On our big lake a cat would be great on the long reaches. Where they loose out though is when we are tacking our way up bays and narrow channels. They are slow tackers so you can't take advantage of the many shifts presented to you.
