Hi - I'm new to posting on this forum, but I have viewed for a while and enjoy the views expressed here. I sail a CL16 #832 on Lake Champlain.
After sailing in gusty (W 10-20 kt wind)yesterday, I found that my port side chain plate had pulled approximately 3 cm up through the deck plate. This tells me that the chainplate has loosened from its mount below deck. There is no access to the chainplate mount so I am considering installing an 8" deck plate in the cockpit coaming (vertical surface)on both the port and starboard sides for inspection and repair. Before I cut - Does anyone know how the chainplate is fastened, and to what? Has anyone repaired a similar failure, and how? I want to be back on the water this weekend.
Thanks,
Ed

My starboard side chainplate came loose.
Mine were pop rivited in place.
I drilled out the pop rivit and used a stainless steel screw aprox 1" long.
I have access ports in the upper side panels near where the chainplates are attached to the side deck. There is no way to access the chainplate to use bolts. My boat has a block foam covered in the area of the chainplate attachment. Therefore no access.
I sailed my boat many many times before I repaired the chain plate.
Drill a small hole and drive the screw in.
Good sailing Tom D. CL16 438

Tom,
Thanks for your reply! On my boat the oval stainless steel deck plate that the chainplate passes through is riveted to the deck with two rivets. The deck plate does not secure the chainplate, it only acts as a cover where the chainplate passes through a slot in the deck. I'm not sure what secures the chainplate below deck. Does this sound similar to yours? Since the chainplate pulled upward about 3 cm the rig loosened accordingly. I was glad to be on starboard tack all the way home after noticing the problem.
Thanks,
Ed

My deckplate was the only problem that I had.
I did not notice any actual loosening of the chainplate itself. I don't know how you can get to the chain plate. You should contact Coty at CL.
Good Sailing Tom D.
