Some of the Canadians here may have seen this already in the news. The Toronto Island Yacht Club was destroyed by fire Sunday. Reports are that some firemen were hurt fighting the blaze! No boats where damaged, to my knowledge.I've read on another site where the Royal Canadian YC is offering their club facility for affected IYC members! The RCYC is also located in the Toronto islands. I know our friend Ken Goodings has his Niagara 35, in the Toronto islands. I can't remember which club however. Ken, I hope that you, Lynn and Silverheels are OK. It's very sad really. The building can be replaced, but the trophies, burgees, and memorablia are lost forever! http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1087769408885&call_pageid=968332188492&col=968793972154 Eric IP: 130.63.85.93 |

I have many fond memories of regattas at IYC. A great bunch of very keen sailors. (My sons raced against the sons of the sailors I raced.) The sailing fraternity is very close in Toronto.Ken is moored on the other side of the islands at Queen City Yacht Club. D'Arcy IP: 65.92.115.85 |

Thanks for your concern....our Queen City Yacht Club is situated 3 km away, on the other end of the island. Charred leaves were falling on the decks...driven by the high winds on Sunday. There are many many cotton-wood trees on the island, now releasing their fluffy cotton white seeds, like snow. These fluffy things collect in the bushes and along the roadsides.....it's thought by some that kids might have been setting them alight in the nearby bush...which, driven by high winds, spread to the grass and then to the wooden club structure. Muggs Island is self-contained, there is no bridge to the main Toronto island chain, and therefore the two island fire trucks couldn't get to the scene. The fire boat "William Lyon McKenzie" was soon pouring water into the fire with their water cannons, but obviously too little...too late. The two car ferries were bringing shore-based equipment to the island and it was a six alarm call. IYC was a nice full-service club...very luxurious with tennis, a pool and a formal glass-fronted dining room. I'm sure that they will quickly clear out the debris, bring in portable buildings and begin to rebuild at once. Of course the club memoriabilia and history has gone.......but luckily no one was killed or seriousdly injured. You can be sure that the other island faciilities will be making a new fire prevention audit and we will take measures to further protect our own 100 year old two story wooden structure.IP: 141.117.228.250 | |
