Please Folks! Don't post images to the board. Some of us still are accessing the group via dial up accounts (and not at 52 kbps, either). Those images you post are wonderful to look at, but they take forever to download. It's far better to post a link to your image so that those who want to see it, and are able to download it, can do so.

If you absolutely must post an image, then at least have the courtesy to compress the image be fore posting it. That way, we don't have to deal with the waste of bandwidth any more than is necessary.

If you don't know how to compress an image, I suggest you google a nifty little program called Irfanview (it's freeware). No, I have no financial or other interest in this software.

Another option may be to warn posters that a photo is included. That way the majority who want to see the images can do so easily and the
posters without high speed internet can avoid same.

Yep, I had problems today too. There isn't hi-speed available where I am. Pathfinders thread with the pics is getting rather large, and heavy with pics. We're working on finding a place to host the pics. Either way, where ever they go, it'll likely be a big download.

Might I make a suggestion. After about 6 pics have been posted to one thread, we start another thread. Sunday Sailor's suggestion of using Irfanview is a good one. If the pics are under 150kb, they should load faster, and quality for the purposes of the forum, shouldn't change.

The subject of posting pictures too large for dial-up users to open quickly comes up periodically, so I'd like to keep this thread going until we solve the problem.

First, we know that everybody likes to post pictures, and everybody likes to see them.

So we must learn how to reduce both the density (is this a correct term?) as well as the image size (so that we can see the whole picture without scrolling - for almost all pics).

I've been trying to work on this since Sunday Sailor started this thread. Here are my findings so far, my not being a computer whiz. So please help me where my knowledge stops.

1. I couldn't figure out how to use Irfanview, so I abandoned that until I get more assistance.

2. I opened my large pictures into an LE version of Photoshop, where I could brighten up the dark spots, and reduce the pixels, and select a print size.

This process gave me what I thought was a nice postable size picture, but at 500 pixels, I don't know if it's still too big for dial-up users.

Here is a test photo:
Pixels: 504k
Print size: width: 6.625 inches
height: 5 inches
resolution: 72 pixels

Please let me know how this is opening for you.

What needs to be done to improve this? Am I out to lunch here, or is this a worthwhile exercise?

Just great for me...but I have a high speed connection. I use 'Photobucket Image Hosting'
when I post my digital pictures and they say images over 250 kb are automatically re-sized.

I have a really slow dial up 24kbs but I really dont mind the time it takes to go through a pic thread.
But it does help me if the topic says theres pictures then if I am in a hurry ( hahaha ) I just leave them till next time.
I really hope that the pics do not stop beacause a lot of times they really help to explain things.

Just my 2 cents worth
