While reaching for the lowest thru-hull in the lazarette on Monday, I streatched and pushed a little too hard against the hatch lip. I felt a pop and a sharp pain in my left ribcage. Hurts a a bit now when I breath deeply or move a certain way. My doctor is on vacation until the 12th and I couldn't get through to the stand-in doctors. Here in Nova Scotia, you don't go to emergency unless you have nothing better to do for 9 or 10 hours...or you are in a life threatening situation. From all I read about ribs, not much can be done anyway...some doctors wrap them up to ease the pain of movement. What to do...tough it out...or try to see the stand-in doctors who might give me a form to get an x-ray??IP: 142.167.237.236 |

Try going to one onf those new walk in clinics, licensed doctors, no appt needed. There is one in Sackville (in the superstore), can't remember the name, might be one in Dartmouth too.------------------ Rob Belliveau 1976 Sandpiper 565 "CoolBreeze" Halifax NS Dartmouth Yacht Club IP: 142.176.14.228 |

In Ontario we have something called telehealth, a phone service where you talk to a nurse and they do a first cut diagnosis on the phone and give you advice as to whether you get in the queue at emerg. I have used it a couple of times and the advice was useful (once they sent me to emerg and the second time they said to keep feeding the kids tylenol and gave us a list of symptoms to watch for that would indicate we need to take them to emerg). Is there a similar service down east?IP: 198.96.180.245 |

Just got hold of the stand-in doctor's office. I have an appointment at 1115 hrs tomorrow. Sure hope he doesn't have to do too much prodding & poking. IP: 142.167.237.236 |

One of us hurt is not enough? Got my cast off yesterday. Wearing a walking boot now. Should be in a regular shoe in a week or so. Hope to be on the water again in a couple of weeks. Hope you did not hurt yourself to bad. Sid IP: 207.200.116.203 |

Just as I thought. The doctor was all chuckles telling me his similar experience reaching over a piece of plywood on his deck and hurting his ribs. He pressed & pushed lightly trying to get me to yelp and said he could do nothing for me. He expects I'll be ok in 2 or 3 weeks unless the bone is cracked..which would take a bit longer. He doesn't bother x-raying unless it's to confirm the longer healing period. Treatment is the same. I could take an anti-inflamitary pain reliever if needed and should hold a small pillow against the sore ribs if I cough or sneeze. No wrapping either. I left his office and went next door to Crappy Tire to pick up a 1" elbow for my cockpit seat drain. In the Plumbing section I ran into my long time doctor, who's on vacation, and tell him the sad story. He laughs and verifys the stand-in's treatment. Says it's a common injury. He's even had women suffer same trying to reach down into deep freezers. Last year it was the wife's cancer scare and operation that screwed up our first summer retired together. Now this. In my 32 year working life, I only recall two summers being messed up by sickness or injury. The first was actually at the very end (Sept 14 '79) when I was thrown through the windshield of my brother-in-law's ambulance in a highway crash. (broken arm, couple teeth lost) and the other when I walked off a curb on the way home from work (early August 8 or so years ago)and twisted my ankle in a sinkhole by the drain. Still have a bit of painting to so and have to setup three lifts of staging to get at one spot. Maybe I can make my two sons feel sorry for me and help a bit.IP: 142.167.237.236 |

I had a broken rib about 20 years ago. Same thing, no tapping. When you refer to coughing and sneezing it brough back all the pain. It was a heavy hit into the boards in a hockey game. Best wishes on a speedy recovery.IP: 209.217.117.198 |

I fell into the boards this past January, got up, thought I knocked my wind out. Went to the bench, bent over to regain my breath, like I've done a million times before playing hockey for 22 years, and something didn't feel right. SHARP PAIN!!!! Went to the locker room, layed down on the bench, almost passed out. My father, who was plyign hockey as well, came in, asked me what I thought, knowing too much to be dangerous when it comes to medical emergencies (being a professional firefighter who goes to calls like these) I told him to call 911. So, an ambulance ride later (of course I knew both the paramedics) some morphine, I was at the hospital. 6 hours later, a x-ray, ct-scan (cause the affected side was where the splean is, they were worried it had ruptured) two broken ribs, off work for over a week, couldn't cough, sneeze, walk, or sit up on my own. Had prescribed "super-duper drugs" (won't say which ones here, I was warned by the doc that people break in to steal this kind) to keep me half-a**ed comfortable while I layed on the couch and watched the tube. It took over 3 months to be back to 100% and back at the gym. I still have a bump to this date from the healing process. So trust me, I know your pain!!!! ------------------ Rob Belliveau 1976 Sandpiper 565 "CoolBreeze" Halifax NS Dartmouth Yacht Club IP: 24.222.184.133 |
