I drove 3 hours east Friday, over to the Bancroft ON area to go sailing. My buddy from the TrailerSailor Forum has a Siren, and of course I had Paradise Pat was my crew on the Florida trip. We sailed Chandos Lake, about 10 minutes from his house. Chandos is a beautiful little lake to sail on for a weekend. There are oodles and oodles of little lakes over that way to sail. The best part was it was all free!! No marina fees, no launch fees, nada! Just the very expensive gas to get there and back. Chandos is 'L' shaped with many little bays to explore, and anchor. There are islands, and points, which sometimes confuses the wind, and sometimes makes you fall off 180 degrees! We anchored in one such bay for the night, rafted up, had a great dinner, and some beers. Next morning was a little drizzly, but no matter. We had a couple cups of fresh perked coffee, and scrambled eggs and bacon The drizzle ended and we sailed for the ramp. I had a great relaxing weekend. Here's what I saw of the Siren, most of the time Now don't get me wrong, the Siren is a great Canadian trailer sailor, but, even with very generous head starts, I was able to easily overtake him. If we caught the same puff of wind when I was close by, I could feel the Sandpiper quickly accelerate faster than the Siren. Pat's thinking his next boat maybe a Sandpiper Eric IP: 130.63.85.93 |

That's interesting Eric. Since the 17' Siren is half the weight of our 'Pipers. i thought they might be a bit quicker. As I remember mine though from 20 years ago, it seemed to take forever to travel any distance. At that time I belonged to the Canadian Forces Sailing Association because it was cheaper and the club was on the Shearwater Naval Base, tucked in behind MacNab's Island and close to the harbour entrance. I was always under the impression that a Siren would be faster because it was lighter. (More dinghy like.)Although we're new to the fleet, we're beginning to get a real feel for the Sandpiper and how fast it can move. Although a bit tender (like a dinghy) , it seems to move right along at its' maximum hull speed (like a well designed keel boat). You can hear a steady churning of the bow wave echoing off the jib when you're moving well. It feels like a much bigger boat. We say Shortwave is giggling at this point; happy to be churning upwind or rolling down the waves off the wind. She does this while keeping the crew comfortable and dry in her well designed cockpit. Maybe the light Siren pounds too much, loosing valuable momentum. It might be faster surfing down waves in a blow; but I'm sure it would also be scarier. D'Arcy IP: 67.70.90.215 |

Hmmmm.... Very interesting analysis guys. Another example of the Sandpipers qualities. If you want this type of boat, it is a great boat of this type. (It suits me very well)IP: 68.248.16.70 |

I had the same thoughts as the rest of you, that the much lighter Siren would match or exceed the Sandpiper's speed. We weren't trying to race mind you. I do try to always sail to the best of my ability however. The Siren had two experienced crew, Pat's partner being a Wayfarer sailor. This is the second time I've actually had my 'piper up close and personal with other similar sized boats, and again she has excelled The Sandpiper looks are always a step above the competion EricIP: 130.63.85.93 |

My brother (who is an experience sailor) had a tanzer 22.One day on the St Lawrence, the wind was strong. So I tied my buddy to the hand rail and was counter balancing the boat as if it was a Hobby Cat. Leaning clomplety on the outside with only the feet on the hull. We past my brother with no problems and we smiled at him. We still laugh about it and proudly say to who ever wants to hear it that a Piper is faster than a Tanzer 22. ------------------ John Quebec city 1981 Sandpiper 927 IP: 66.131.169.240 |
