I have been looking on in embarassement at the great photos of Sandpipers with polished topsides and with shining brightwork. I have seen the smiling crews on 'Pipers sailing in exotic locations. And all the while, Sandpiper #123 is still on its trailer with one flat tire and the grass growing long where the mower cannot reach. And yet, I have spent many, many hours on this dirty little boat this summer. You may recall that my cockpit sole collapsed last year. So, I cut it out completely. I have taken this opportunity to glass over the forward and aft plywood bulkheads and to properly tab them to the hull and the underside of the liner. I also applied 6 layers of 9oz glass between the liner and the hull at the bilge. I laminated a new floor panel using the foam bouyancy as a core and glassed it into place with tabbing above to the inside of the cockpit and below to the inside of the liner. The new cockpit sole is now 3" higher at the forward end to assist with draining (the root cause of the sole deteriorating). A 13" x 24" SeaChoice hatch has been installed to provide access to this space. That's a lot of work and a lot of time laying on my back with epoxy dripping into my hair. My suit of work clothes is damned-near bullet proof from the mess. And Sandpiper #123 is now probably 10kg heavier than the rest of the fleet. But, she is just a little more seaworthy than before. I still have the months of August and September to get some sailing. I doubt that I will be able to match the miles that the other Sandpipers have been logging. I will see you on the water.

Stay with it, you will get there. I'll give you a little insentive, I'll be on Lake Dillon today. Over 9000 feet in the mountains. Got to be one of the prettiest places to sail. And yes the whole crew will be going again. Sid IP: 64.12.117.21 |

Hi Superpiper! I wondered where you've been and how you're getting on with your boat.Glad to hear you're nearly ready to wet her hull! Hopefully the pics of the other 'pipers have inspired and motivated you to get her back in the water and sailing! The guys here have some great looking boats eh! I too, hopefully, will be back on the water soon. My injured knee seems to be healing well, and with any luck, I'll soon be able to launch and set her up in maybe a week or two. Happy sails to you, Eric [This message has been edited by Eric (edited July 11, 2004).] IP: 130.63.85.93 |

Thought I would get my 'Piper wet today. My buddy Vic was up from the Virgin Islands for his mom's funeral. He is a wealth of information on sailboats, has his captain'papers, does deliveries throught the Carribean, Florida, along the US Eastern Seaboard up to Ontario and as far as Ireland and the Azores. He also has his suveyors certificate. Since the ocean tide was at dead low, I decided to take the boat to a local lake. When we got there, I noticed that I had left the fuel hose/bulb at home. D'oh! The wind was gusting quite a bit and the lake was full of whitecaps so we spent some time rigging the boat and deciding what I needed to raise the mast singlehanded. The morning wasn't a complete waste.IP: 142.177.157.31 |
